Chapter 4 - The Mansion of HorrorsThe drive through the low-hanging valley fog of Charlottesville was dead silent. Daniel, Miller, and a small, unbadged tactical unit from the federal medical fraud division bypassed the main iron gates of the Vance estate, approaching through the dense briar patches along the southern perimeter.

The estate loomed out of the gray mist like a gothic monument to old money and hidden graves. Inside, the lights were completely dead, save for a single amber glow flickering from the second-story master bedroom windows.

Daniel slipped through the shattered basement window they had used during the previous infiltration, his hand resting on the heavy black tactical flashlight tucked into his belt. The interior of the mansion smelled of wet plaster, expensive wood polish, and the metallic tang of ozone from a dying security system.

As they reached the grand mahogany staircase, a horrific sound echoed from the upper hallway—the high-pitched, agonizing shriek of a young boy.

"Dad! The monster is cutting open my stomach! It’s devouring me from the inside!" Leo’s voice rattled off the marble tiles of the foyer.

Daniel cleared the stairs three at a time, his medical bag slamming against his hip. He burst into the boy's bedroom just as Julian Vance, his expensive linen shirt torn, his face pale with a mix of terror and exhaustion, was holding his son down on the floor. Standing in the corner of the room, holding a half-empty glass of dark, murky fluid, was Arthur Vance’s personal secretary, the very woman who had managed the legal paperwork for Claire’s forced commitment.

"Drop the glass," Detective Miller barked, her service weapon raised and locked onto the woman's chest.

The secretary didn't panic. She smiled, a small, hollow expression under the dim light. "You're too late, Detective. The boy has already ingested the primary dose. Julian thinks he’s saving his family name by keeping Claire quiet, but he doesn't realize that the Vance Family Trust dissolves entirely if there are no direct heirs left alive. The pharmaceutical patents revert back to the board of directors. To my board."

Julian looked up from his weeping son, his eyes wide with a sudden, devastating realization. The very power he thought he wielded was nothing but a string being pulled by the corporate vultures behind his father’s old firm. "You... you did this to Elena Cross too," Julian whispered, his voice cracking as he held his stomach-aching boy.
