Chapter 12 - The Poison Trail EndsThe tactical retreat through the storm drain was a nightmare of cold water and blinding rain. Claire emerged onto the rocky shore of Pier 4, her hands bleeding from the sharp stones, her body shaking from hypothermia. Leo was semi-conscious in her arms, his small body burning with a sudden, stress-induced fever that threatened to trigger a secondary reaction to the chemical residue in his liver.

Mack’s vehicle roared onto the gravel beach, its headlights cutting through the sheets of rain. Daniel burst out of the woodline a second later, his shirt torn, his left arm covered in fresh lacerations but still holding the vital medical bag containing the emergency antidote.
"He's crashing!" Daniel shouted, lunging into the back of the SUV as Mack slammed the vehicle into reverse. "The stress has triggered an acute hepatic failure! I need the IV line now, Sarah!"
Inside the bouncing, speeding vehicle, amidst the chaos of a midnight escape, Daniel and Sarah worked with the flawless synchronicity of two trauma specialists who refused to let death win. Daniel's fingers were steady despite the blood dripping from his own arm, sliding the needle into Leo's tiny vein, pushing the counter-agent that would finally wash the last of the Vance poison out of the boy's genetic future.

Leo let out a long, ragged gasp, his eyes fluttering open as the fever broke beneath the heavy dose of the military clearance drug. "Mom..." the boy whispered, his small fingers reaching for Claire's face. "The monster... it's gone."
Claire pulled her son against her chest, her tears mixing with the rainwater on his forehead. "Yes, baby. The monster is gone. We're free."
