Chapter 1 - The Emergency Room InterceptionThe smell of ozone, metallic blood, and sterile industrial floor wax always defined the third shift at County General Hospital. Dr. Daniel Thorne snapped his blue nitrile gloves onto his wrists, his eyes tracking the red flashing lights of the incoming trauma gurney. The automatic double doors burst open, letting in a swirl of midnight rain and the frantic shouting of the paramedics.

"Thirty-two-year-old female, identified as Claire Vance," the lead EMT shouted, his boots skidding on the polished linoleum as they pushed the gurney down the main corridor. "Found at the bottom of the main staircase at her estate in Charlottesville. Deep lacerations to the facial tissue, possible concussion, signs of acute respiratory distress. The husband states she tripped over a loose rug."

Daniel stepped into stride with the gurney, his fingers immediately dropping to the patient's wrist. Her pulse was thready, leaping wildly into the 140s. Claire’s eyes were wide, bloodshot, and rolling back into her head with a terrifying, primal panic. Her lips were split, a thin line of fresh crimson pooling in the groove of her chin.

Walking aggressively beside the gurney was a man who looked completely out of place in the chaotic world of emergency medicine. Julian Vance wore a flawless, charcoal-gray bespoke suit, his silk tie perfectly knotted, his leather oxfords clicking rhythmically against the floor. He didn't look like a grieving husband; he looked like a prison guard escorting a high-value asset.

"Doctor, she needs an immediate sedative," Julian said, his voice carrying a smooth, deep authority that demanded obedience. "She has a severe history of clinical hysteria. She threw herself down the stairs during an episode. Just give her the shot so we can transfer her to our private family clinic."

Daniel ignored the man, waving his team into Trauma Bay 4. "Get her on the monitors now. Pre-op labs, full tox screen, and get me a portable X-ray for the cervical spine."

He leaned over Claire, his voice dropping into a calm anchor. "Claire, can you hear me? I’m Dr. Daniel. Tell me what happened."

Claire’s fingers suddenly flew upward, clawing at Daniel’s sleeve with surprising, desperate strength. Her jaw trembled, but her throat seemed locked by a terrifying constraint. "The... the shower," she whispered, her breath smelling faintly of a strange, chemical sweetness. "He... he was in the shower..."

"Shut up, Claire," Julian snapped, stepping directly into the bay, his massive frame cutting off the light from the overhead examination lamp. "Doctor, I told you she is delusional. Do your job and quiet her down."
