Chapter 13 - The Standoff at Pier 4But the final reckoning was waiting at the edge of the water. Julian Vance’s luxury yacht, the Silver Shadow, was already throwing off its heavy mooring lines at the far end of Pier 4, its massive diesel engines churning the black river water into a white froth. Julian stood on the upper deck, a leather duffel bag packed with offshore bearer bonds clutched in his fist, his face distorted by a manic, desperate arrogance.

Mack’s SUV slammed through the wooden security gates of the pier, its tires screaming as it skidded to a halt mere feet from the water's edge.
Daniel and Claire stepped out into the blinding glare of the yacht’s spotlights.
"Julian!" Claire shouted, her voice cutting through the roar of the engines and the wind. "It's over! The laboratories are gone! Arthur is in a federal cell! There is nowhere left for you to hide!"
Julian drew a silver, large-caliber revolver from his waistband, his hand shaking violently as he targeted Claire's chest. "I made you, Claire! You were nothing before you took my name! I will sink this entire city before I let a rogue doctor and a broken woman take my empire!"
He pulled the trigger.

But Daniel had already anticipated the movement. He lunged forward, throwing his weight into Claire, sending them both crashing to the wet wooden planks of the pier just as the heavy bullet tore through the air where her heart had been, shattering a wooden stanchion into thousands of splinters.
Before Julian could chamber a second round, the searchlights of three federal law enforcement helicopters cut through the storm clouds, pinning him in a blinding triangle of white light. Sniper fire erupted from the nearby shipping cranes. A single, high-velocity round struck the cylinder of Julian's revolver, shattering the steel weapon and sending it spinning into the black, churning depths of the Atlantic. Julian fell to his knees, his hands ruined, his corporate kingdom reduced to a circle of cold concrete and steel handcuffs.
