Chapter 3 - The Midnight EscapeThe storm outside the private military wing of Fort Belvoir did nothing to drown out the heavy, mechanical rhythm of the dialysis machine filtering the toxins from

"The blood work just stabilized, Daniel," Nurse Sarah said, her voice strained as she handed him the latest laboratory printout. "The compound isn't just a standard sedative. It’s an undocumented variant of the Vancetine-4B line. But that’s not the most alarming part. Look at the molecular structure under the screen. It contains trace amounts of heavy-metal particulates. It’s designed to settle in the brain tissue, mimicking early-onset dementia."

Before Daniel could respond, the heavy reinforced wooden door of the isolation room swung open. Detective Miller stepped inside, her trench coat dark with rainwater, her eyes carrying a profound, exhausted grimness.

"We have a massive complication," Miller said, pulling out her digital notepad. "The tactical team that hit the civilian hospital last night wasn't just sent to retrieve Claire. We just received a frantic emergency broadcast from the Vance estate’s private security dispatch in Charlottesville. Julian didn't go straight to the docks. He went back to the house first. He knows we have the medical data."

Claire, whose eyes were finally clear of the chemical fog, pushed herself up against the pillows of the hospital bed. Her voice was cracked, yet filled with a sudden, desperate panic. "My son... Leo. Is Leo safe? Julian will do anything to keep the inheritance line pure."

Miller looked directly at Claire, her expression dropping into a mask of professional dread. "Your son is alive, Claire. But three hours ago, his private night nurse, a woman named Elena who we believe was working secretly to protect you, intercepted a glass of milk being brought to the boy's chambers. The child was screaming on the floor, clawing at his stomach, claiming a monster was devouring him from the inside. When the nurse held the glass up to the security cameras, the sediment at the bottom matched the exact pharmaceutical footprint of the drug they were using on you."

Daniel felt a cold fury settle into his chest. "Julian is poisoning his own son to clean up the witness trail?"

"No," Claire whispered, her tears finally breaking past her eyelids, tracking down the faded bruises on her cheeks. "Julian wouldn't do that to Leo. He views Leo as his ultimate trophy. It’s someone else inside that house. Someone who wants the Vance fortune wiped clean out of the bloodline. Julian is a monster, but he’s being manipulated by a shadow bigger than him. We have to go back."
