Chapter 5 - The Silent WitnessBy the time the heavy sedative began to wear off, the rain outside had turned into a relentless, rhythmic downpour that lashed against the reinforced glass windows of the ICU. Claire opened her eyes, her pupils slowly contracting as the artificial lights hit them. She didn't look at the room; she immediately looked at her hands, which were twitching rhythmically against the white sheets.

Daniel sat on a low stool by the bedside, having shed his stained scrub top for a clean white coat. He kept his movements deliberately slow, keeping his hands open and flat on the mattress so she could see them.

"Claire," he said softly. "You're safe. You're at the hospital. Julian isn't here."

The mention of her husband's name caused a violent tremor to rip through her entire body. She pulled her knees toward her chest, her fingers clawing at the high collar of the hospital gown to hide the dark, thumb-shaped bruises on her neck. "He... he's coming back," she sobbed, her voice a cracked, dry whisper. "He always comes back. You don't understand... the walls in the house, they have cameras. He knows what I'm thinking before I say it. He told me I fell. I remember the floor... I remember the water... maybe I did fall."

"Look at me, Claire," Daniel said, his voice anchoring her wandering gaze. "You didn't fall. The marks on your neck are from a human hand. The chemical in your blood is a toxin designed to make you doubt your own eyes. You are not crazy. You are a witness to your own survival."

Thám tử Miller stepped through the privacy curtain, her beige trench coat dripping wet, a small digital voice recorder held between her fingers. "Claire, I need you to listen to me carefully. Julian fled the scene, but his legal team is trying to lock this whole place down. If you give me a formal statement right now—just five words confirming he put his hands on your throat—I can bypass the local magistrate and call in a state domestic violence warrant. But you have to say it. The system won't move unless you speak."

Claire looked from Miller's badge to Daniel's quiet, encouraging eyes. She opened her mouth, her jaw trembling, but before the first syllable could form, the distinct sound of a loud, angry commotion erupted from the nurse's station outside.

"She's in here!" a voice shouted. It was Julian’s lawyer, Arthur, and this time, he wasn't alone. He had brought three uniformed county sheriffs with him, their leather holsters unbuckled.

He turned to Sarah, who had already rolled a clean, unmarked linen transport cart into the room from the rear service elevator. "Sarah, kill the monitor feeds. Loop the telemetry from Bay 2 so the central desk thinks her heart is still beating in this bed."
Chapter 7 - The Hunted HunterBy the next morning, the world had completely inverted. The ambulance had successfully reached Fort Belvoir's military medical enclave—a sovereign federal facility where local county sheriffs and corporate lawyers had no jurisdiction without a federal warrant. Claire was safely tucked away in a high-security isolation room, an IV line slowly purging the remaining Vancetine from her liver.
Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the PastInside the quiet isolation ward, the chemical fog had finally cleared from Claire’s eyes. For the first time in two years, her gaze was sharp, her voice steady, carrying the distinct steel of a woman who had finally remembered who she was before she became a prisoner.
Chapter 9 - The Poison TrailThe infiltration of the Vance estate in Charlottesville had to be done completely off the grid. Daniel enlisted the help of Jack "Mack" MacIntyre, a retired military police investigator who specialized in low-profile intelligence gathering.

Chapter 11 - The Breaking PointThe federal conference room was vast, lined with polished mahogany panels and dominated by a long glass table that reflected the cold, white light of the chandeliers above. Julian Vance sat at the far end, wearing a flawless gray suit, his hair neatly parted, a small, arrogant smile resting on his lips. Beside him sat Arthur, his face bruised from the previous night's encounter but his composure entirely restored.
