Chapter 15 - The Light on the HorizonOne year later.

The morning sun rose over the quiet, brackish waters of the Rappahannock River, casting a brilliant, golden finger of light across the wooden deck of a newly constructed medical clinic. The facility—named The Elena Cross Foundation for Recovery—sat on a quiet, pine-lined spit of land, far away from the sterile, fluorescent halls of corporate medicine. It was a place built for healing, funded entirely by the liquidated assets of the Vance estate.
Dr. Daniel Thorne stood on the pier, his left shoulder fully healed, wearing a simple linen shirt and trousers. He was no longer a hunted resident; he was the medical director of a sanctuary that had already helped dozens of women find their footing after escaping the dark.
The door to the clinic opened, and Claire walked out onto the deck.
Her skin had taken on a deep, healthy, wind-burned glow from months of living by the water. The waxy, translucent cast of the Vancetine was completely gone, replaced by a vibrant, steady light in her green eyes. She walked with no limp, her chin up, her hair catching the river breeze.
She handed Daniel a ceramic mug of hot coffee, her fingers brushing against his. The touch was simple, natural, and entirely free of the old terror.
"The final transfer went through this morning," Claire said, looking out at the copper water where a small flock of white herons was taking flight against the blue sky. "The Vance name has been legally erased from every document. I'm just Claire again."

Daniel wrapped his hand gently around hers, his eyes reflecting the wide, open horizon ahead of them. "It's a good name, Claire. It's a name that means you survived."
She smiled, a real, radiant expression that reached all the way to her eyes, and leaned her head against his shoulder. The storm had passed, the perimeter was permanently secure, and as the sun climbed higher into the clean, limitless sky, they both knew that the dark would never be able to touch them again.
