Chapter 4 - Shadow in the ChartLeaving the lawyers stranded in the hallway under the watchful, nervous eyes of two hospital security guards, Daniel slipped into the dark, windowless alcove of the main laboratory. Sarah was waiting for him, her face illuminated by the pale blue light of a dual-monitor workstation. Her hands were shaking so violently she could barely hold the computer mouse.

"Daniel, look at this," she whispered, her voice cracking with a mixture of professional horror and pure dread. "I didn't just pull her standard admission history. I used an old backup server bypass to access the deep toxicology logs from her private check-ups over the past twenty-four months. The local clinics she visited always labeled her visits as 'routine treatment for chronic panic disorder.' But look at the chemical panel."
Daniel leaned over her shoulder, his eyes tracking down the long columns of laboratory data. His breath hitched in his throat.
"Vancetine-4B," Daniel read aloud, the words tasting like copper in his mouth. "That's not an approved FDA medication. That's a proprietary research compound. It's a heavy-chain synthetic benzodiazepine derivative that Vance Pharmaceuticals has been developing in their offshore labs for neurological suppression."
"It's a chemical cage, Daniel," Sarah said, pointing to a graph showing a massive spike in Claire's blood serum levels over the past six months. "Look at the side-effect profile listed in the internal drug database. At high, sustained doses, it causes retrograde amnesia, extreme disorientation, and profound emotional dependency. It mimics the exact symptoms of a severe manic episode. Julian wasn't just managing her anxiety. He was systematically poisoning her mind, ensuring she remained too confused to remember what he did to her, and too unstable to ever be taken seriously by a court of law."

Daniel reached out, touching the screen where Claire's raw data lay exposed. The piece of paper Arthur Vance held in the hallway wasn't a protective order; it was a execution warrant for her sanity. If they let the Vance family take her back, they would pump her full of Vancetine until her brain was nothing but gray wool, and the truth of what happened in that shower would be buried forever.
"We need a full chemical clearance," Daniel said, his voice turning into cold, hard iron. "Get a dialysis cart prepped. We're going to flush her system manually, regardless of what the lawyers say. We have to give her mind a chance to fight back."
