Chapter 19 - The Trial (Part II - The Verdict)The turning point of the trial came on the fourth day.

The prosecution called Helen Mercer to the stand.
A collective gasp went through the courtroom as the elderly matriarch of the Mercer family walked slowly to the witness box. She did not look at her son, who sat at the defense table, his face suddenly white, his hands clutching the edge of the wood.
"Mrs. Mercer," the Commonwealth Attorney asked, his voice gentle. "Why are you here today?"
Helen looked at the jury. Her voice was thin, but it carried to every corner of the silent room.
"I am here because I love my son," she said. "And because I know that if I do not speak the truth today, I will have helped him destroy another life."
She reached into her bag and pulled out the small, gold-edged diary Thomas had returned to her.
"This is my husband's record," she said, her voice cracking but remaining steady. "And mine. It contains the names of four women who were beaten by my son. It contains the amounts we paid to their families to buy their silence. It contains the names of the doctors we hired to keep them medicated so they would not testify."
She turned slowly, her eyes finally locking onto Evan's.
"He did not try to save Claire, ladies and gentlemen. He tried to break her. Just like his father broke me. And I will not let the Mercer name protect a monster anymore."
The courtroom exploded into a roar of whispers and the sharp, rapid clicking of the court reporter's machine.
Evan stood up, his chair screeching against the floorboards. "Mother! No! You're lying! They made you say that!"
"Sit down, Mr. Mercer!" the judge shouted, his gavel striking the block with three deafening cracks.
But the trial was already over.
