Chapter 18 - The Trial (Part I - The Defense)The courtroom in Richmond was packed to the gallery doors.

The trial of Evan Mercer and Arthur Vance was the largest story in the state. The press sat in the front rows, their pens moving in a rhythmic, scratching chorus, their cameras waiting outside the double glass doors.

The defense attorney—a high-priced specialist from Richmond named Marcus Stone—stood before the jury. He was a master of distraction, a man who knew how to turn a victim’s pain into a weapon against her.

"This is not a case of domestic abuse, ladies and gentlemen," Stone said, his voice warm, resonant, and filled with a calculated empathy. "This is a case of a tragic, mental health crisis. Claire Hale Mercer has suffered from severe, clinical anxiety since she was a teenager. Her husband, Evan, spent three years trying to save her from her own demons."

He pointed a finger toward the witness stand, where Claire sat.

"The bruises? The swollen knee? Those were the unfortunate results of a desperate man trying to keep his wife from throwing herself down the stairs during a manic episode. The drugs? They were prescribed by a licensed physician to keep her safe, to keep her calm. The prosecution wants you to believe there is a monster in that house. But the only monster here is the disease that has ravaged this young woman’s mind."

Claire sat perfectly still. She did not look at the jury. She did not look at the whispering gallery.

She looked at her father, who sat in the front row of the spectators' section, his uniform immaculate, his eyes fixed on her with an absolute, unshakeable pride.
