Chapter 13 - The DepositionThe deposition took place in a windowless conference room on the top floor of a glass tower in Arlington.

The room was filled with the smell of expensive leather, ozone from the copy machines, and the cold, artificial air of corporate law. Arthur Vance sat at the end of the long glass table, surrounded by three junior associates and a court reporter whose fingers hovered over her machine like a waiting spider.

Claire sat opposite him. Thomas stood behind her, his uniform immaculate, his presence in the room like a heavy iron weight that kept the air from moving.

Vance leaned forward, his hands clasped over a blue folder.

"Mrs. Mercer," Vance began, his voice smooth and paternal. "I want to remind you that you are under oath. I want to ask you about the evening of June 12th, 2024. The night you were admitted to the clinic in Bethesda for what the records call 'acute emotional distress'."

"I was there because Evan had locked me in the guest room for thirty-six hours," Claire said. Her voice did not shake. She looked Vance directly in the eye.

"You have no proof of that assertion," Vance said, checking his notes. "The medical report, signed by Dr. Aris, states you were suffering from severe hallucinations brought on by a misuse of your anxiety medication."

"Dr. Aris is currently being investigated by the Virginia Medical Board for insurance fraud and illegal distribution of controlled substances," Claire said.

Vance’s pen stopped. He looked at Claire, then at Thomas, then back to Claire. "That is an unproven allegation."

"We filed the paperwork this morning, Arthur," Thomas said from behind his daughter. "Along with the financial records showing your signature on the checks that paid Dr. Aris's personal mortgage for the last five years. You weren't just defending a client, Vance. You were funding the doctor who kept his victims quiet."

Vance slowly closed his folder. The professional polish was gone. Under the harsh fluorescent lights, his skin looked thin, gray, and dry.

"This is a smear campaign," Vance muttered.

"No," Claire said, leaning forward until her face was reflected in the polished glass of the table. "This is the truth. And we’re just getting started."
