Chapter 14 - The LeakBy Friday, the battle spilled into the public eye.

An article appeared on the front page of the Washington Post’s local section. The headline was calculated, sharp, and designed to ruin Thomas's reputation before he could bring his evidence to court:

DECORATED COLONEL ACCUSED OF KIDNAPPING IN WEALTHY VIRGINIA ENCLAVE Military authorities investigate allegations that Colonel Thomas Hale used command resources to remove his daughter from her marital home.

The article was filled with anonymous quotes from "sources close to the Mercer family," painting Claire as an unstable, drug-dependent young woman whose heroic husband was merely trying to save her from herself, and Thomas as an overbearing, violent military father who couldn't accept his daughter’s illness.

Thomas sat at the kitchen table, the newspaper open before him.

Staff Sergeant Miller stood by the door, his face red with anger. "Sir, we need to counter this. I can go on the record. I can tell them what we saw in that bedroom—"

"No, Miller," Thomas said, his voice calm. "If we fight them in the press, we play their game. They have more money, more connections, and more public relations firms than we do. We don't fight in the mud, Sergeant. We fight in the light."

"But your reputation, sir—"

"My reputation is a shadow, Miller," Thomas said, standing up and folding the paper. "It’s just what people think of me. My character is who I am when the doors are closed. We hold our ground. The truth is an anchor; it doesn't move just because the tide is high."

He walked to the window, looking out at the river.

"Besides," Thomas added with a small, cold smile. "They just committed the one error I was waiting for. They put their lies in writing. Now we can sue them for defamation, and that means their personal emails are subject to legal discovery."
