Chapter 15 - The TrapThe plan to catch Evan Mercer required a piece of bait he could not resist: the belief that he was winning.

Thomas had Mack leak a false document to one of Vance’s junior associates—a mock legal brief suggesting that Claire was preparing to sign a settlement agreement and return to the Alexandria townhouse in exchange for a quiet divorce and a cash payment.
The brief was designed to look desperate, as if Thomas and Claire were running out of money and could no longer afford the legal battle.
It worked within twelve hours.
A text message appeared on Claire’s old phone, which Thomas had kept active in a drawer:
I knew you’d come to your senses. Meet me at the cabin tonight. Just you. We’ll sign the papers, and we can go home. I won't let them hurt you anymore, Claire. I promise. - Evan
"He’s coming alone," Claire said, holding the phone. Her hand was steady now, her voice cold.
"He thinks he’s coming to collect his prize," Thomas said. He checked the magazine of his Colt .45 and slid it home with a sharp, heavy click. "He thinks he has won. That is the most dangerous moment for any commander."

Thomas looked at Claire, his eyes softening. "You don't have to be here, Claire. I can handle this."
"No," she said, her chin rising. "I want to be here. I want him to look at me and see that I’m not afraid of him anymore."
