Chapter 10 - The Midnight BreachThe night of the two-week mark arrived with an unnatural stillness. The storm had passed, leaving behind a thick, heavy fog that rolled up from the ravines of the city, swallowing the gardens of the mansion in a gray shroud.

Sofía was in her suite, packing her worn medical bag. Her two weeks were up. Mateo’s skin was perfectly clear; his lungs were clean, and Valeria had been thoroughly trained on the environmental protocols. There was no medical reason for her to stay.
Yet, as she folded her faded blue uniform, her heart felt heavy, a dull ache pulling at her ribs. She looked at the silver paperweight on the desk—the replacement Nicolás had ordered after she shattered the original.
A shadow moved across the doorway. Nicolás stood there, dressed in his dark suit, looking at her luggage.
"So, you are truly leaving," he said, his voice flat, unreadable.
"My contract is fulfilled, Mr. Velasco," Sofía said, trying to maintain her professional distance, though the use of his formal name felt hollow now. "Mateo is out of danger."
"He is out of medical danger," Nicolás said, walking into the room. "But the world outside this house hasn't changed. The Mendozas are still there. My mother is still out there." He stopped beside her, his hand resting on the handle of her bag. "Stay, Sofía. Name the position. Chief Medical Officer of the Velasco International Foundation. I will build a clinic in the poorest sector of the city for you. Just... don't walk out that gate."
Sofía looked up at him, her eyes bright with unshed tears. "You're still trying to buy me, Nicolás. You're just using clinics instead of cash now. I can't live in a cage, no matter how gold the bars are. I belong out there, where people need a nurse, not a bodyguard."
Before Nicolás could respond, the lights inside the mansion flickered once, twice, and then died completely.
The emergency generators, which usually kicked in within three seconds, remained dead. The silent, heavy darkness of a total security black-out fell over the estate.
Nicolás’s internal radio crackled to life, his chief guard’s voice coming through in a panicked burst of static. "Boss! The main biometric bypass was triggered from inside the house! The electronic gates are opening—"
The transmission was cut off by the sharp, rhythmic roar of suppressed automatic weapons coming from the front courtyard.
"Valeria," Nicolás growled, his hand drawing his Beretta instantly. "She did it."
He grabbed Sofía by the arm, dragging her into the corridor. "Go to the nursery. Get Mateo. Don't go to the bunker—if the system was bypassed from the inside, the bunker is a trap. Go to the service elevator behind the kitchens. It runs on a separate hydraulic line."

"What about you?" Sofía asked, her heart hammering against her ribs.
"I am going to end this," Nicolás said, his face hardening into the terrifying mask of the mafia king. "Run, Sofía!"
