Chapter 4 - The Poisoned LedgerBy the fourth day,

Mateo’s recovery was nothing short of miraculous. The deep, angry crimson that had coated his torso had faded into a pale, healing pink. He had gained two pounds, his appetite returning with a vengeance now that his digestive tract was no longer stressed by systemic allergic inflammation.
"Look at him," Valeria said, sitting on the freshly scrubbed floorboards as Mateo crawled clumsily toward a simple wooden block. "He hasn't cried once today. Not once."
Sofía smiled, setting down her medical journal. "He’s a strong boy. He has his father's resilience, fortunately."
Valeria’s smile faded slightly, her eyes drifting toward the closed door. "Nicolás isn't an easy man to love, Sofía. Our engagement... it was never about romance. My father owed his empire to Nicolás’s father. When my father died, the only way to protect our family's shipping lines was to bind us to the Velasco name. But when Mateo was born, and the crying started... Nicolás changed. He became a monster of control because he couldn't protect his own blood."
"Control is just fear in a expensive suit, Valeria," Sofía said gently, reaching out to touch the younger woman's hand. "He thinks if he commands the world, nothing can hurt him. But the world doesn't care about commands."
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors down the hall burst open. The sound of running feet and the sharp, metallic click of automatic weapons clearing their chambers shattered the afternoon peace.
Sofía stood up instantly, her maternal instincts kicking in as she stepped between Mateo and the door. "Valeria, get the baby into the bathroom. Lock the door from the inside."
Before Valeria could move, the nursery door flew open. Nicolás strode in, his jacket gone, his white shirt stained with grease and a dark, unmistakable smear of wet blood across his left forearm. His eyes were wild, the cool facade of the billionaire completely shattered.
"Get down," he commanded, grabbing Sofía by the waist and pulling her away from the window line just as a low, rumbling explosion rattled the glass panes of the mansion.
Down in the valley of Bosques de las Lomas, a plume of black smoke was rising from the main security gatehouse.
"What is happening?" Sofía demanded, trying to break free from his grip, but his arm was like an iron bar around her ribs. "Are we under attack?"
"The Mendoza Cartel," Nicolás spat, his jaw clenched as he pulled his custom silver Beretta from his waistband. "They just hit my transport trucks on the highway, and a strike team tried to breach the perimeter wall. Someone gave them the exact layout of our security blind spots. Someone inside this house."
Valeria let out a terrified shriek, clutching Mateo to her chest as she slid down the wall. "Leonor... it has to be Leonor. She knows the security codes!"
"My mother is a traitor, but she isn't stupid enough to give the Mendozas my coordinate codes unless she wanted me dead," Nicolás said, his gray eyes locking onto Sofía. The intensity of his gaze was suffocating. "They aren't just trying to kill me, Sofía. They know Mateo is my weakness. They know about his illness, and they know the house has been cleared of heavy security to accommodate your medical requirements."
"Don't you dare blame my medical requirements for your cartel wars!" Sofía shot back, her voice rising above the distant sound of automatic gunfire echoing from the gardens below. "If your house wasn't a fortress of poison and blood, we wouldn't be in this position!"
"Shut up and stay low!" Nicolás roared, pushing her down behind the reinforced wooden base of the pine crib. He turned to his head guard, who had just appeared at the door with a tactical rifle. "Take Valeria and the boy to the underground bunker through the wine cellar. Now!"
"What about the nurse?" the guard asked.
Nicolás looked down at Sofía. She was terrified—he could see the tremor in her hands—but her eyes remained sharp, focused, and entirely devoid of the submissive panic he was used to seeing in women of his world.
"She stays with me," Nicolás said. "The bunker code requires a two-factor biometric scan from my terminal in the office. If they breach the house, I need her to keep the boy alive if he suffers a relapse from the stress."
"No," Sofía said, standing up despite the danger. "I'm going with Valeria and Mateo."
"You are doing what I tell you!" Nicolás grabbed her hand, his grip firm but surprisingly careful not to hurt her skin. He dragged her out of the nursery and down the reinforced corridor toward his private office, the sounds of the gun battle outside growing louder by the second.
As they entered the office, a stray bullet shattered the reinforced glass of the window, showering the dark leather furniture with sparkling shards. Nicolás threw Sofía onto the floor behind his heavy mahogany desk, covering her body with his own as more glass rained down.
Sofía could feel the rapid, violent thudding of his heart against her back. The smell of copper, smoke, and his raw, masculine heat filled her senses. For all his brutality, his body felt like an impenetrable shield over her.
"Why do you live like this?" she whispered against the floorboards, her voice trembling. "With all your wealth... why choose a life where your son has to hide in a concrete hole under the earth?"
Nicolás didn't answer immediately. He fired three rounds through the broken window into the garden below, followed by a grunt of satisfaction as a figure fell from the trellises. He looked down at her, his face inches from hers, his gray eyes dark with a sudden, raw vulnerability.
"Because when you are born into the dark, Sofía, you don't choose the light," he murmured, his voice cutting through the chaos. "You just choose who gets to hold the torch. And right now, you are the only light my son has left."
Before Sofía could digest his words, the office door was kicked open. A man in black tactical gear, bearing the red snake insignia of the Mendoza cartel, stepped into the room, his rifle raised directly at Nicolás's head.
Nicolás’s gun was empty, his slide locked back.
In that fraction of a second, as the assassin’s finger tightened on the trigger, Sofía didn't think about her clinic, her bus fares, or her pride. She reached up, grabbed the heavy marble paperweight from the edge of the desk, and hurled it with all her strength at the gunman's face.
The marble struck the assassin’s nose with a sickening crunch. The rifle fired wild, the bullet burying itself into the ceiling as the man stumbled back, blood spurting from his face. Nicolás didn't waste the second she had bought him. He lunged forward, his silver knife flashing in the sunlight, and brought the man down to the floor with absolute, lethal precision.
The room fell into a sudden, ringing silence, broken only by the heavy breathing of the two survivors.
Nicolás stood up, wiping the blood from his hands onto his trousers. He looked down at the dead assassin, then at the shattered marble paperweight, and finally at Sofía, who was still on her knees, her face pale, her chest heaving.
He walked over to her, extending his hand. This time, it wasn't a command. It was an offering.
"You just saved my life," Nicolás said, his voice entirely stripped of its arrogant edge.
May you like
Sofía looked at his hand, then stood up on her own strength, refusing to take it. She wiped her uniform down, her breath coming in ragged gasps. "I saved a father for Mateo. Don't flatter yourself, Mr. Velasco."
But as she walked past him toward the hidden staircase leading to the bunker, her shoulder brushed his, and neither of them could deny the electric, dangerous spark that had just been forged in the blood and glass of the Velasco empire.
