Chapter 7 - The Sovereign of the HouseThe two-week deadline Sofía had set was fast approaching, but the tension inside the Velasco mansion had only deepened. The physical scars on Mateo’s skin were nearly gone, replaced by smooth, healthy skin that thrived under the simple regime of unscented cotton and organic olive oil treatments.

But as the child healed, the emotional baseline of the house shifted.

Sofía had established a routine that completely upended the traditional hierarchy of the estate. The servants, who had spent decades living in absolute terror of the Velasco name, found an unlikely protector in the nurse. When Nicolás shouted at a young kitchen hand for serving his coffee thirty seconds late, Sofía walked into the dining room, took the silver tray from the girl’s hands, and dismissed her.

"If you want your coffee served with military precision, hire a soldier, Mr. Velasco," Sofía said, setting the cup down with a sharp clink before him. "That girl has been awake since four in the morning cleaning the lower kitchens. Her hands are shaking from exhaustion, not incompetence."

Nicolás looked up from his iPad, his gray eyes flashing. "You are interfering with the management of my staff, Nurse Reyes."

"I am managing the health of this household," Sofía corrected, sitting across from him without invitation—a gesture that still made the security guards outside the door nervous. "Exhausted staff make mistakes. Mistakes lead to cross-contamination. If someone uses the wrong dish soap on Mateo’s bottles because they're falling asleep on their feet, my work here is ruined. So yes, I am interfering."

Nicolás stared at her, his finger hovering over the screen. For three decades, everyone in his life had bent their will to his comfort. Yet this woman treated his grand dining room like a public hospital ward, and him like an uncooperative patient.

"You have a very large mouth for someone who owns so little," Nicolás said, though there was no real venom in his voice anymore. It had become a game between them—a verbal sparring match that had become the only part of his day he looked forward to.

"I own my conscience, Mr. Velasco. It's an expensive luxury you clearly couldn't afford," she shot back, taking a piece of dry toast from the central basket.

Valeria walked into the room then, holding Mateo. The baby saw Sofía and immediately let out a joyful shriek, reaching his chubby arms toward her. Sofía’s face transformed instantly, the sharp, defensive lines melting into a warm, radiant smile as she took the boy into her lap.

Nicolás watched the transition. He saw the way his son nestled his head against Sofía’s faded blue shoulder, his small fingers twisting into the coarse cotton of her uniform. Mateo had never done that with Leonor. He rarely did it with Valeria. He had chosen the poor nurse as his sanctuary.

And as Nicolás looked at the way the morning light caught the dark, honest brown of Sofía’s eyes, he realized with a sudden, sinking weight in his chest that he was beginning to do the same.
