Chapter 14 - The AwakeningTwo days later, the morning sun finally broke through the perpetual smog of Mexico City, casting a soft, golden light across the private medical suite of the Velasco estate.

Sofía opened her eyes. The throbbing ache in her temple had faded into a dull, manageable pulse. The air in the room was warm, carrying the distinct, clean scent of unscented hospital soap and fresh chamomile.
She turned her head slowly.
Sitting in the chair beside her bed was Nicolás. He had finally changed his clothes; he wore a simple, soft cotton shirt, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He looked older, lines of exhaustion carved deep around his mouth, but his gray eyes were clear, steady, and filled with a strange, quiet reverence.
In his arms, wrapped in a plain white cotton sheet, slept Mateo. The child’s skin was perfectly clear, his breathing long and peaceful.
"You brought him back," Sofía whispered, her voice dry.
Nicolás stood up, carefully setting the sleeping baby into the unfinished pine basin beside her bed. He then sat on the edge of her mattress, taking her uninjured hand into his own.
"I brought him back because you gave me the time to do it," he said, his voice dropping into that soft, intimate register she had heard during the storm. "If you hadn't thrown that marble... if you hadn't fought Javier on the balcony... I would have lost him forever."
Sofía looked down at their joined hands. The disparity between them was still there—his large, calloused, billionaire's hand holding her small, nurse's hand. But the distance felt smaller now, bridged by the blood they had both spilled to protect the child.
"Where is Valeria?" Sofía asked.
"She is gone," Nicolás said flatly. "I have signed the annulment papers. Her family assets have been liquidated to pay for the damages to the estate, and she has been sent to a private estate in Switzerland under permanent medical supervision. She will never see Mateo again."
"And your mother?"
Nicolás’s eyes turned cold for a brief second. "Leonor was arrested at the border by federal authorities three hours ago. I handed over thirty years of her private financial records to the Attorney General. She will spend the rest of her life in the Santa Martha Acatitla prison. The board has been purged. The Velasco family is... clean."
Sofía let out a long breath, her fingers gently curling around his. "There is no such thing as a clean mafia family, Nicolás."
"Then I will stop being a mafia family," he said, looking directly into her eyes with an intensity that made her breath catch. "I have already begun the transfer of Velasco International’s logistics sectors to a blind public trust. The shipping lines, the private security—everything is being legalized under international maritime law. I am stepping down as chairman by the end of the month."

Sofía stared at him, her heart thudding violently against her ribs. "You are giving up your empire? For what?"
"For him," Nicolás said, pointing toward the sleeping baby. "And for the woman who taught me that a billion pesos can't buy a single night of peace." He leaned closer, his face inches from hers. "Don't leave, Sofía. I don't want to buy you anymore. I want to earn you."
