Chapter 8 - The Crack in the ArmorLate that night, a violent thunderstorm broke over the city. The rain lashed against the reinforced glass windows of the mansion, mimicking the sound of distant gunfire that had haunted the property days earlier.

Sofía couldn't sleep. She walked down the dark corridor toward the backup kitchen to prepare a warm chamomile tea for Valeria, who had been suffering from severe anxiety since the attack.

As she passed the private study, she saw a sliver of yellow light cutting through the doorway. The smell of high-grade tobacco and heavy Scotch drifted into the hall. She pushed the door open gently.

Nicolás was sitting on the leather sofa, his head buried in his hands. His shirt was unbuttoned halfway down his chest, his hair messy. On the glass table before him lay an old, silver-framed photograph of a young woman with the same intense gray eyes as his—his sister, who had died a decade earlier in a cartel retaliation bombing in Guadalajara.

Sofía stepped into the room, her soft rubber-soled shoes making no sound. She didn't say anything. She simply walked to the side table, poured a glass of warm water, and set it next to his Scotch.

Nicolás didn't look up, but his shoulders shifted. "I don't need water, Nurse Reyes."

"Your liver does," Sofía said softly, sitting on the opposite end of the long leather sofa. "And so does your brain. Alcohol is a depressant, Nicolás. You're already carrying the weight of an entire empire on your back; you don't need the chemicals helping it crush you."

It was the first time she had used his first name. The sound of it from her lips made him lift his head. His eyes were bloodshot, stripped of the terrifying authority that usually kept the world at bay.

"My mother sold my security codes to the Mendozas," he said, his voice raw, barely above a whisper. "She gave them the coordinates to the room where her own blood was sleeping. I spent thirty-eight years believing that even in our world, blood meant something. That she loved me in her own twisted way."

"She loves power, Nicolás," Sofía said, her voice filled with a genuine, quiet empathy that caught him completely off guard. "And power is an addiction. When you take it away from someone who has lived on it for forty years, they go through withdrawal. They will tear down the house just to smell the smoke."

Nicolás looked at her, his gaze dropping to her small, bandaged hand. "Why aren't you afraid of me? I could have you thrown out of here in the middle of this storm. I could ensure you never see the inside of a hospital again."

"Because you won't," Sofía said, looking back at him with absolute certainty. "Beneath all this armor, beneath the suits and the guns and the reputation, you're just a terrified father who is realizing that his fortress can't keep out the ghosts. You need me to keep your son safe, Nicolás. But more than that... you need someone in this house who isn't afraid to tell you the truth."

Nicolás leaned forward, the distance between them shrinking until she could feel the heat radiating from his skin. His hand reached out, his long fingers gently tracing the edge of the white bandage on her palm.

"And what is the truth, Sofía?" he whispered.

"The truth is that you are lonely," she said, her breath catching as his thumb brushed the sensitive skin of her wrist. "You are the richest man in Bosques de las Lomas, and you are completely, utterly alone."

Nicolás didn't pull away. He closed his eyes, leaning his forehead against her shoulder for a single, silent second—a surrender that no living soul had ever witnessed from the boss of the Velasco cartel.
