Chapter 9 - The Reckoning at the GalaThe Grand Ballroom of the Newport hotel was a sea of black ties, silk dresses, and flashing cameras. Vivienne LaRue stood at the center of the room, looking radiant in a white gown that made her look like a queen. She was smiling, sipping champagne, accepting the condolences of her high-society friends for the "tragic loss" of her future stepson.

“It’s been so hard,” Vivienne told a reporter, her voice dripping with artificial grief. “But Henry and I are finding strength in each other. We are moving forward.”
The heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.
The chatter died instantly.
Henry Lawson walked in. He wore a flawless black tuxedo, his jaw set, his presence dominating the room. But he wasn't alone.
On his arm was Sophie Miller.
She wore an emerald-green silk dress that contrasted beautifully with her dark hair. Her scars were hidden beneath elegant lace gloves, her posture proud and unbroken.
Vivienne’s glass slipped from her hand, shattering on the marble floor. "Henry...?" she stammered, her face turning pale. "What... who is she? Why is she here?"
“She’s here to show the world a miracle, Vivienne,” Henry said, his voice carrying over the silent crowd.
He raised his hand.
On the massive projection screens behind the orchestra, where Vivienne’s charity promotional videos had been playing, the screen flickered.
It didn't show a charity.
It showed the night of the storm. It was the footage from the hidden security camera Silas had recovered from the old fountain—the camera Vivienne’s hackers had missed.
In high-definition, the entire room watched as Vivienne LaRue threw dirt onto the wooden crate, her face twisted in a manic, delighted laugh. They heard her voice: “Goodbye, little prince. Daddy belongs to me now.”
Shrieks of horror erupted through the ballroom. Guests recoiled from Vivienne as if she were a monster.
“No!” Vivienne screamed, turning to the security guards. “It’s a fake! It’s a deepfake! Henry, she’s trying to ruin us!”
Before she could run, the side doors opened, and a dozen federal agents stepped inside.
“Vivienne LaRue,” the lead agent said, holding a pair of steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for attempted murder, kidnapping, and interstate wire fraud.”
Vivienne looked at Henry, her eyes wild with terror. “Henry, please! I did it for us! I did it for our future!”
“Your future is in a federal penitentiary, Vivienne,” Henry said coldly.
As she was led away, screaming, her white dress dragging on the shattered glass of her own champagne, she locked eyes with Sophie.

“You’re nothing!” Vivienne shrieked, her voice cracking. “You’re just a maid! You’re nothing!”
Sophie didn't flinch. She simply held Henry’s arm tighter, her head held high as the monster was dragged into the dark.
