Chapter 8 - The Ghost of NewportThe Vermont estate was a fortress of timber and glass, hidden deep in the snowy woods. For two weeks, it became a sanctuary of healing.

Under Sophie’s care, Leo flourished. The color returned to his cheeks, and he began to speak in full sentences, his laughter echoing through the high-ceilinged rooms. Henry watched them from the shadows, his cold heart softening with every passing day. He had spent his entire life building walls to protect his family, only to realize that the greatest protection was the quiet courage of a woman his world had dismissed as "nothing."
One evening, as they sat by the roaring fire, Henry handed Sophie a glass of wine.
“Marcus finished the financial audit,” Henry said. “Vivienne’s family has organized a major charity gala in Newport next week. They are planning to announce our marriage—and the merger of our shipping assets—to appease their French creditors.”
“What are you going to do?” Sophie asked.
“I’m going to attend,” Henry said, a dark smile playing on his lips. “And I want you there with me.”
“Henry, I’m a maid,” Sophie said, looking down at her hands, which were finally healing, though scarred. “I don’t belong in their world.”

Henry reached out, his warm, rough fingers gently cupping her chin, forcing her to look at him. The intensity in his gray eyes made her breath hitch.
“You belong wherever you want to stand, Sophie,” he said softly. “You saved my family. You are the strongest person I have ever met. Let them see who really holds the keys to this kingdom.”
