Chapter 6 - The Trap is SprungBy noon the next day, Marcus—Henry’s chief intelligence officer—had delivered the dossier.

Henry sat in his study, the papers spread across his desk. The evidence was damning. Vivienne’s family estate in France was bankrupt; her father owed forty million dollars to a cartel in Marseille. She hadn't married Henry for love; she had been inserted into his life to secure his shipping routes for her family’s creditors.

And the five million dollar ransom? It was a cover story to explain Leo’s “disappearance” while she secured her position as the sole heiress to the Lawson estate.

“We found the maid’s car, boss,” Silas said, stepping into the room. “An old black Honda. It was spotted on a traffic cam near an abandoned motel in South Kingstown.”

“Prepare the cars,” Henry said, standing up.

“Should we call the police?”

“No,” Henry said, pulling a custom-made silver semi-automatic from his desk drawer and sliding it into his shoulder holster. “This is a family matter.”

At the motel, Sophie was packing her small bag when she heard the sound of heavy tires crushing the gravel outside.

She froze.

Looking through the cracked plastic blinds, she saw three black SUVs park in a perfect, synchronized line, blocking the exit. The doors opened, and half a dozen men in tailored suits stepped out.

And in the center of them was Henry Lawson.

Sophie’s heart leaped into her throat. She ran to the bed, grabbing Leo and pulling him into the small bathroom, locking the door behind them.

“Leo, hide behind the tub,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “Don’t make a sound. No matter what.”

The front door of the motel room didn't just open—it shattered. The wood splinters rained down on the cheap carpet as Henry Lawson stepped inside, his gun drawn, his face a mask of absolute fury.

“Sophie!” Henry’s voice boomed, shaking the thin walls. “Bring me my son!”

Sophie stepped out of the bathroom, closing the door behind her. She was terrified, her body shaking so hard she had to lean against the wall, but she didn't step aside. She stood between the mafia boss and the bathroom door.

“You’re not taking him,” she said, her voice surprisingly steady.

Henry pointed the gun directly at her chest. “You took my son, Sophie. You demanded five million dollars. Give him to me, or I swear to God, you won’t leave this room alive.”

“I didn’t take him!” Sophie screamed, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. “I saved him! Your fiancée—the woman you’re going to marry—she buried him alive in the garden! I dug him out with my bare hands! Look at my hands, Henry! Look at them!”

She held up her hands. They were raw, covered in dried blood, her fingernails split to the quick, caked with black garden soil.

Henry froze. His eyes traveled from her ruined hands to her face.

Before he could speak, the bathroom door clicked open.

Leo stood in the doorway, clutching his blanket. He looked at his father, then at Sophie.

“Daddy,” Leo said, his voice clear and loud. “Don’t hurt Sophie. She dug me out of the dark box. Vivienne put me there.”
