Chapter 3: Behind Closed Doors

After the guests quietly left, Henry asked Grace to meet him in his office.
She stood near the door, still wearing the simple housekeeper uniform.
"I never told him to call me that," she said before Henry could speak.
"I know."
"You have every right to dismiss me."
"I didn't ask you here to fire you."
Grace looked surprised.
Henry opened Noah's medical records.
"Every emergency contact..."
"You were the one who signed him into the hospital."
She nodded.
"The nanny quit."
"You were overseas."
"There wasn't anyone else."
Henry kept reading.
"Every preschool meeting."
"Every vaccination."
"Every therapy appointment."
"You attended."
Grace lowered her eyes.
"Someone had to."
Henry closed the folder.
"When was the last time..."
"...my son spent an entire day with me?"

Neither of them answered.
Because both already knew.
