Chapter 2: The Child Who Refused to Let Go

The silence inside Whitmore House lasted only a heartbeat.
Then Noah cried again.
Louder.
Harder.
His tiny hands stretched desperately toward Grace.
"Mommy!"
His voice cracked beneath the crystal chandeliers.
Grace's eyes filled with tears.
"Please," she whispered. "You're hurting him."
Vivian tightened her grip.
"He is not your child."
"No," Grace answered quietly.
"But he is scared."
Henry stepped forward.
"Vivian."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Let Noah go."
Vivian forced a laugh.
"Henry, he's only confused."
"No."
Henry looked directly at his son.
Children that young could not fake terror.
Noah wasn't reaching for comfort.
He was escaping fear.
The little boy buried his face against Henry's shoulder the moment his father lifted him away.
But even then, one tiny hand remained stretched toward Grace.
"Mommy..."
The word echoed through the ballroom again.
Every guest heard it.
No one spoke.
Chapter 2: Questions No One Could Answer
The orchestra quietly stopped playing.
Henry carried Noah into the private library while Grace stood frozen in the ballroom.
Vivian followed.
"So now we're going to let the help manipulate your son?"
Henry ignored her.
He knelt in front of Noah.
"Buddy."
"Can you tell Daddy something?"
Noah nodded through his tears.
"Why do you call Grace Mommy?"
The little boy blinked.
"Because..."
He looked genuinely confused.
"She is."
Henry frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"When I have bad dreams..."
"Mommy stays."
"When I'm sick..."
"Mommy stays."
"When I cry..."
"Mommy sings."
He pointed toward the ballroom.
"The other lady..."
His lower lip trembled.
"...she gets angry."
May you like
Henry slowly turned toward Vivian.
Her face had become pale.
