Chapter 5: The Visitor

One afternoon Emily's best friend stopped by unexpectedly.

She looked around the house in disbelief.

"I almost didn't recognize this place."

Emily laughed.

"Neither did I."

Her friend lowered her voice.

"So... what changed?"

Emily looked toward the kitchen where my mother was preparing tea while my sister entertained Leo in the living room.

"My husband stopped trying to keep everyone happy."

"He started protecting the person who needed him most."

Her friend smiled.

"You look lighter."

Emily nodded.

"I finally feel like someone's carrying the weight with me."

When I overheard those words from the hallway, I realized something.

May you like

Protection isn't always dramatic.

Sometimes it's simply refusing to let someone carry a burden alone.
