Not the silence of resentment.
The silence of peace.
Emily sat at the dining table with a cup of tea, absentmindedly tracing circles along the rim of the mug.
I pulled out the chair beside her.
"You look different," I said.
She smiled faintly.
"I feel different."
There was another pause.
"I forgot what it felt like not to dread hearing footsteps."
My chest tightened.
"Was it really that bad?"
She nodded without hesitation.
"Every morning I woke up wondering who I'd disappoint first."
"The baby."
"The house."
"Your mother."
"Your sister."
"Myself."
She looked down at her hands.
"I stopped wondering if anyone would help."
"I started wondering how long I could survive."
I reached across the table and took her hand.
"I'm sorry."
She squeezed my fingers.
"I know."
"And that's why I can finally let it go."
