Chapter 7: The Legacy We Chose

Late that evening, after the guests had gone home, Emily and I stood on the back porch watching Leo sleep through the baby monitor.
The night air was cool.
The house behind us glowed warmly.
Emily slipped her hand into mine.
"Do you think he'll remember any of this?"
She meant the hard days.
The arguments.
The tears.
I looked through the window at our son sleeping peacefully.
"No," I answered.
"He'll remember something better."
She tilted her head.
"What?"
"Growing up in a home where love sounded louder than expectation."
She rested her head against my shoulder.
For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
