Chapter 3: My Sister's Choice

That evening my sister knocked on Emily's bedroom door.

She held a folded basket of baby clothes.

"I washed these," she said awkwardly.

Emily smiled.

"Thank you."

An uncomfortable silence followed.

Finally my sister sighed.

"I owe you an apology."

Emily looked surprised.

"I kept thinking you were lazy."

"I never realized you were drowning."

Emily didn't speak.

My sister continued.

"I saw everything you did."

"I just assumed it was... normal."

"It wasn't."

Tears gathered in Emily's eyes.

"You don't have to fix the past."

"I know."

"But I'd like to do better tomorrow."

Emily nodded.

"I'd like that too."
