Chapter 9 - The New Director of OperationsWith the corporate espionage probe completely wrapped up and Apex Industries officially dissolved under bankruptcy liquidation, Mercer Aerospace secured two massive government contracts for next-generation commercial aircraft propulsion systems.

The board of directors met on a bright Tuesday morning to ratify the new corporate charter.
At the head of the mahogany conference table, I looked across the room at our senior executive team. The toxic elements—plants installed by Arthur Vance’s network—had been thoroughly purged, replaced by veteran engineers and loyal managers who had proven their worth over decades of service.
“Before we adjourn,” I announced, opening my leather binder, “I want to propose one final structural appointment.”
The board members leaned in attentively.
“As many of you know, our administrative oversight and facility management have faced unique challenges over the past year,” I continued, a faint smile touching my lips. “Effective immediately, I am creating a new executive oversight committee for corporate welfare and estate operations. And I am appointing Maria Santos as its director.”
A wave of stunned silence swept through the room, followed immediately by enthusiastic applause led by our chief financial officer.
Maria, who had been sitting quietly in the back corner taking transcription notes, turned pale and stood up abruptly. “Mr. Mercer—Elijah! I can’t possibly—I’m a housekeeper, not a corporate executive!”
“You’ve managed my family’s home for eleven years, Maria,” I said, standing up and walking toward her with a plaque bearing her new official title. “You have more integrity, loyalty, and common sense than every board member at Apex Industries combined. Consider it a promotion long overdue.”

Maria looked around the room at the smiling faces of our top executives, wiped a tear from her cheek, and finally nodded with quiet, immense pride.
“Thank you, Mr. Mercer,” she whispered. “I won’t let you down.”
