Chapter 7 - Rebuilding the FoundationThe main assembly floor of Mercer Aerospace buzzed with the familiar, comforting symphony of progress: the rhythmic hum of robotic plasma cutters, the sharp spark of welding torches, and the quiet murmurs of engineers reviewing blueprints on giant touch-screens.

As I walked out onto the cat-walk, accompanied by Maria—who had agreed to tour the facility for the first time in years—dozens of technicians and machinists paused to look up.

Word had traveled fast through the company grapevine about what happened at my house, and more importantly, how Maria had risked her own safety to protect my legacy.

A tall, grease-stained senior engineer named Henderson stepped forward from the turbine assembly line, wiping his hands on a shop rag. He took off his cap and nodded respectfully.

“Mr. Mercer,” Henderson said, his voice carrying over the ambient noise of the plant. Then he turned his gaze to the woman standing beside me. “And Miss Maria. We heard about what went down. Just want you to know... the whole floor’s behind you.”

A low murmur of agreement rippled through the hundreds of workers standing along the railings.

Maria’s eyes welled with tears, but she held her head high, offering a small, proud wave to the men and women who had built every engine my company ever produced.

“Thank you, boys,” Maria said, her voice steady and clear. “Mr. Mercer’s father always said this company wasn't built on steel and glass. It was built on the people who show up every day and do the honest work.”

I placed a hand gently on her shoulder, feeling an overwhelming sense of gratitude. For eighteen months, I had allowed myself to get distracted by high-society galas, corporate social climbing, and a fiancée who cared more about status than substance.

That illusion was gone. In its place stood reality: loyal people, honest work, and a foundation that could never be shaken by corporate spies or false promises.
