Chapter 3 - The Price of a SecretThe audio file played to an empty, suffocating room.

“...he’s a naive corporate drone,” Vanessa’s voice echoed clearly from the wall speakers, sounding smug and dripping with condescension. “Elijah thinks because I wear his diamond ring, I’m loyal to his stupid little manufacturing plants. Once the merger documents are signed next month, Julian and I will clean out the corporate trust and leave him completely bankrupt.”

A second voice joined the recording—smooth, confident, and utterly unfamiliar.

“And the marriage?” the man asked.

“A formality, darling,” Vanessa laughed on the tape. “A very expensive formality. Just keep feeding the board members at Apex Industries the financial disclosures. Elijah suspects nothing.”

Apex Industries.

My primary market competitor. A multi-billion-dollar conglomerate run by a ruthless corporate raider named Arthur Vance—a man who had tried to execute a hostile takeover of Mercer Aerospace three times in the past five years and failed every single time.

Until now, it seemed.

I turned away from the screen. Vanessa was slumped against the bookshelf, sliding slowly down to the Persian rug, her expensive purple dress crumpled around her knees, sobbing dry, angry tears of defeat.

“Apex,” I muttered, the pieces clicking into place with horrifying clarity. “Arthur Vance didn't just want to buy my patents. He wanted my entire corporate identity. And you were his inside operative.”

“He promised me everything, Elijah,” Vanessa sobbed, looking up at me with puffy eyes and ruined makeup. “You were always working! You never looked at me, you never took me to Paris, you never cared about anything except your stupid airplanes!”

“I built this company from nothing, Vanessa,” I said, my voice dangerously steady. “I gave you a home, an unlimited expense account, and absolute trust. And you traded it to a man who would burn my father’s legacy to the ground for pocket change.”

I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed a direct, encrypted number.

“Mr. Mercer?” a crisp, professional voice answered on the second ring.

“Agent Vance,” I said—no relation to Arthur, thankfully, but rather the senior partner at Blackwood Corporate Investigations, the firm I had quietly hired three weeks ago when my gut instinct started screaming that something was wrong in London. “Cancel my return flight to the UK. We have our evidence.”

“Shall we move in, sir?” the investigator asked.

“Execute Phase Two,” I commanded, looking down at Vanessa. “Freeze all joint accounts, revoke her residential access codes, and notify the federal prosecutor handling the industrial espionage probe against Apex Industries. Have local authorities waiting at the front gates in twenty minutes.”

Vanessa scrambled to her feet, her eyes wide with sheer terror. “You can’t do that! My family—my father—he’ll ruin you in the press!”

“Your father is a disgraced municipal judge in Chicago who hasn't spoken to you in five years because you stole his retirement fund,” I said flatly. “You built your entire life on lies, Vanessa. And the bill has finally arrived.”

There was a heavy knock at the front door downstairs.

Maria looked up from her chair, her eyes shining with quiet, profound relief.

“Shall I get that, Mr. Mercer?” she asked softly.

“No, Maria,” I said, walking toward the study door and turning the brass handle. “Let the police in. It’s time we cleaned house.”
