Chapter 10 - The House That Built UsThe sun sank below the Cascade Mountains, painting the Seattle sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and deep indigo.

I stood on the back patio of the estate, holding a warm mug of black coffee, watching the city lights flicker to life across the valley below.

The house was alive again. Not with the frantic, artificial energy of high-society cocktail parties or the cold, calculated whispers of corporate spies, but with the warm, enduring spirit of a true home. Inside, Maria was singing softly as she prepared dinner in the kitchen—real food, made from scratch, filling the hallways with the rich aroma of garlic, rosemary, and roasted tomatoes.

My phone rested silently on the stone table beside me. No threatening texts. No secret surveillance feeds. No betrayal waiting in the dark.

For the first time in eighteen months, my life was entirely my own.

The front gates clicked open, and Maria’s son pulled his car into the driveway to pick her up for the evening. She stepped out onto the patio, wearing her coat, carrying her handbag, and looking every bit the proud director she had just become.

“Goodnight, Elijah,” she said warmly. “Don’t stay up too late working on those propulsion blueprints.”

“I won’t, Maria,” I smiled, walking over to hug her. “Go home and get some rest. We have a big board meeting tomorrow.”

As she walked down the pathway toward the waiting car, I looked back up at the towering marble pillars framing the grand entrance.

They were solid. They were real. And no matter what storms tried to roll in from the outside world, this house—and the legacy it represented—was built to last forever.
