Chapter 5 – Five Minutes of Trust

Chapter 5 – Five Minutes of Trust
The first bullet shattered the kitchen window.
Glass sprayed across the floor as Emily instinctively threw herself behind the island, clutching the canvas laundry bag against her chest.
Lydia screamed.
Miguel grabbed his mother and pulled her behind the dining room wall just as two more shots ripped through the living room.
The attackers weren't trying to scare them.
They were trying to make sure no one walked away.
Outside, one of the black SUVs blocked the driveway while another parked across the street, trapping the house from both directions.
The leader, a tall man in a charcoal suit, spoke calmly into a radio.
"The package is inside."
"Retrieve it."
"No survivors."
Emily felt every word like ice running through her veins.
The "package" wasn't money.
It wasn't jewelry.
It was Claire's evidence.
The truth hidden inside the USB.
Miguel looked toward the back hallway.
"There are six of them."
Emily glared at him.
"You know exactly how many."
"I used to."
His answer came so quietly that she almost didn't hear it.
"They don't work for me."
"I worked for them."
Silence hung between them despite the chaos outside.
Another bullet tore through the front door.
Emily's voice shook.
"Who are they?"
Miguel closed his eyes.
"A company called Black Horizon."
"They look like a private security firm."
"They're not."
"What are they?"
"They clean up problems."
Emily frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"It means when powerful people need evidence to disappear..."
"...Black Horizon makes it disappear."
Another crash echoed through the house.
The attackers had forced open the front entrance.
"We're out of time," Miguel whispered.
He led Emily and Lydia toward the laundry room at the back of the house.
Emily hesitated.
"Where are you taking us?"
"The crawl space."
"There isn't one."
"There is."
He pulled a shelf away from the wall.
Behind it sat a narrow steel hatch.
Emily stared.
"You built this?"
Miguel nodded.
"Five years ago."
"For this?"
"No."
"For the day I decided to leave them."
He opened the hatch.
A cramped tunnel stretched beneath the house toward the detached garage.
"I never thought I'd actually need it."
Emily looked at him.
"So you were planning to run."
"I was planning to survive."
Lydia quietly climbed into the tunnel.
Emily still refused to move.
Miguel met her eyes.
"I know I've lied about almost everything."
"But one thing was always true."
"What?"
"I never wanted you hurt."
Emily almost laughed.
"You hid another family from me."
"I know."
"You lied every single day."
"I know."
"You let me believe our marriage meant something."
Miguel lowered his head.
"It did."
Emily's voice broke.
"Then why?"
He looked at her with tears in his eyes.
"Because every lie made the next one harder to stop."
For the first time since opening the mattress...
Emily believed he was telling the truth.
Not because it excused anything.
But because it sounded exactly like the confession of a broken man.
Heavy footsteps echoed through the hallway upstairs.
"They're searching room by room."
Miguel shoved the laundry bag into Emily's hands.
"Whatever happens..."
"Don't lose this."
"What about you?"
"I'll slow them down."
Emily grabbed his sleeve.
"They'll kill you."
He smiled sadly.
"They were always going to."
Before she could answer, he pushed the steel hatch closed.
Darkness surrounded Emily and Lydia as they crawled through the narrow tunnel.
Above them came muffled voices.
"They're not here."
"Search downstairs."
Then...
A gunshot.
Emily froze.
Another shot.
Lydia covered her mouth to stop herself from crying.
Emily wanted to turn back.
To scream.
To ask Miguel why.
Why he had destroyed so many lives.
Why he had waited until it was too late to tell the truth.
But the tunnel only moved forward.
Outside...
Unmarked FBI vehicles raced toward the neighborhood.
Agent Rebecca Collins listened to updates through her headset.
"We have confirmed armed suspects."
"Possible hostage situation."
She looked toward Captain James Walker beside her.
"They're moving faster than expected."
Walker nodded.
"We cannot let that USB disappear."
"No."
"Too many people have died already."
Inside the house...
The Black Horizon team surrounded Miguel.
The leader calmly removed his gloves.
"You disappointed a lot of important people."
Miguel wiped blood from a cut on his forehead.
"I know."
"Where's the evidence?"
He smiled.
"You'll never find it."
The man sighed.
"I was hoping you'd make this easier."
Miguel looked toward the floor beneath him.
Toward the hidden tunnel.
Toward Emily.
Toward the only chance she had left.
"I've spent years making the wrong choices."
He whispered.
"I'm done helping you."
The leader nodded to one of his men.
A pistol was raised.
Before the trigger could be pulled...
Police sirens exploded outside.
Red and blue lights flooded the windows.
"FBI!"
"Drop your weapons!"
The attackers cursed.
The leader looked back toward Miguel.
"This isn't over."
Smoke grenades rolled across the floor.
The room disappeared into thick gray clouds.
Gunfire erupted from both sides.
Amid the confusion, Miguel stumbled toward the garage entrance.
He wasn't running away.
He was running toward the tunnel exit.
Toward Emily.
Toward one final chance to make things right.
Whether he would reach her before Black Horizon...
Or before the FBI reached him...
No one yet knew.
But for the first time in years...
Miguel wasn't trying to protect his lies.
May you like
He was trying to protect the people those lies had nearly destroyed.
