Chapter 4 – The House of Lies

Chapter 4 – The House of Lies

Miguel stood beside the black SUV, his eyes fixed on the bedroom window.

He wasn't angry.

He wasn't panicking.

He was smiling.

That frightened Emily more than anything else.

People smiled when they believed they were still in control.

"Mrs. Alvarez?"

Agent Rebecca Collins' voice crackled through the phone.

"Are you still there?"

Emily forced herself to whisper.

"He's outside."

"What?"

"Miguel."

"I can see him."

There was a brief pause.

Then the agent's voice became calm and precise.

"Listen to me carefully."

"Do not confront him."

"Do not let him know what you've found."

"We have agents on the way."

Emily looked at the driveway.

Miguel had begun walking toward the front door.

Slowly.

Confidently.

As if he knew exactly how much time he had.

"I don't think they'll get here first," Emily whispered.

Agent Collins answered immediately.

"Is there another exit?"

"The back door."

"Take the evidence."

"Leave now."

Emily glanced toward the torn mattress.

The plastic bag.

The USB drive.

The prepaid phone.

Claire's letters.

The photographs.

Everything that had shattered her marriage now represented the only chance to expose the truth.

She stuffed everything into a canvas laundry bag.

Lydia grabbed her arm.

"I'm coming with you."

Emily nodded.

Neither woman spoke again.

They quietly slipped into the hallway.

The front door unlocked.

Click.

Miguel entered the house carrying his suitcase.

"Emily?"

His voice sounded warm.

Almost cheerful.

"I'm home."

No answer.

He smiled faintly.

"I know you're here."

The suitcase remained by the entrance.

He wasn't planning to stay long.

He walked directly toward the bedroom.

His smile disappeared the moment he saw the mattress.

Cut open.

Foam spilling across the floor.

Empty.

His breathing stopped.

"No..."

He dropped to his knees and ripped apart the torn fabric.

Nothing.

The plastic bag was gone.

The USB was gone.

The letters were gone.

For the first time in years...

Miguel looked genuinely afraid.

He whispered only one word.

"Claire..."

Outside...

Emily and Lydia hurried through the backyard.

The Arizona sun was blinding.

Emily's hands shook so badly she nearly dropped the laundry bag.

Suddenly...

A voice came from behind them.

"Emily."

They turned.

Miguel stood on the patio.

He had moved through the house faster than either of them expected.

His expression had changed completely.

The warmth was gone.

So was the smile.

"You opened the mattress."

It wasn't a question.

Emily stepped backward.

"Stay away from us."

Miguel slowly raised both hands.

"I'm not here to hurt you."

Lydia laughed bitterly.

"You've been hurting people for years."

Miguel ignored his mother.

His eyes remained fixed on Emily.

"You watched the videos."

Emily said nothing.

"The USB..."

"Give it to me."

His voice remained calm.

Almost gentle.

But Emily noticed something she had never seen before.

Desperation.

Real desperation.

"What was Claire talking about?" Emily demanded.

Miguel closed his eyes.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

He looked at her.

"I never wanted any of this."

Emily's anger exploded.

"You never wanted another family?"

"You never wanted another child?"

"You never wanted to lie to me every single day for seven years?"

Miguel lowered his head.

"I loved both of you."

Emily stared in disbelief.

"You call this love?"

He took one careful step closer.

"I was trying to protect everyone."

"The evidence."

"The money."

"The people behind it."

"If those files become public..."

Emily interrupted him.

"They're criminals."

Miguel answered quietly.

"You think I'm the dangerous one."

His eyes suddenly shifted toward the street.

"You haven't met the people I worked for."

At that exact moment...

Three black SUVs turned onto their street.

None displayed license plates.

They didn't slow down.

Emily frowned.

"Who are they?"

Miguel's face turned white.

"Oh, no."

The vehicles stopped in front of the house.

Six men stepped out.

Dark suits.

Earpieces.

No badges.

No uniforms.

One of them carried a rifle case.

Miguel whispered,

"They found us."

Emily looked at him.

"You know them."

He nodded.

"They don't leave witnesses."

Lydia stepped backward.

"My God..."

The lead man calmly walked toward the front gate.

He wasn't rushing.

He expected no resistance.

Miguel suddenly grabbed Emily's shoulders.

"You have to listen to me."

She pulled away.

"Don't touch me."

"If they get that USB..."

"They'll kill you."

Emily laughed bitterly.

"Why should I believe anything you say?"

Before Miguel could answer...

The first gunshot shattered the front windows of the house.

Glass exploded across the living room.

Lydia screamed.

The attackers had arrived.

And suddenly...

The affair.

The lies.

Even the secret child.

None of it mattered as much as staying alive.

Miguel looked directly at Emily.

"I know you hate me."

"I deserve that."

"But if you want to survive..."

"You have to trust me for five more minutes."

Emily looked from Miguel...

...to the armed men advancing through the front yard...

...to the laundry bag containing every secret Claire had died to protect.

She had spent seven years trusting the wrong man.

Now she had five seconds to decide whether trusting him one last time would save her life...

Or end it.
