Chapter 2 – The Bag Inside the Mattress

Chapter 2 – The Bag Inside the Mattress
The plastic bag slipped from Emily's trembling hands and landed on the bedroom floor with a dull thud.
For several long seconds, she couldn't breathe.
The smell pouring from the torn mattress had become almost unbearable, but it was no longer what frightened her.
It was what she had found.
Inside the bag were dozens of neatly bundled envelopes, each tied with faded blue ribbon.
A stack of photographs.
An old prepaid cell phone.
A passport.
A small black USB drive.
And underneath everything else...
A birth certificate.
Emily slowly picked it up.
The paper shook in her hands.
Name of Child: Daniel Carter.
Date of Birth: Six years ago.
She frowned.
They had been married for eight years.
She and Miguel had spent nearly five of those years trying unsuccessfully to have children.
Miguel had cried with her after every failed fertility treatment.
He had held her hand through every doctor's appointment.
He had promised that, even if they never became parents, they would always have each other.
Yet the birth certificate listed Miguel Alvarez as the father.
Emily's knees nearly gave way.
"No..."
The word escaped as little more than a whisper.
She reached for the photographs.
The first showed Miguel standing beside a smiling young woman with long dark hair.
His arm rested comfortably around her shoulders.
They looked...
Happy.
The second photograph was worse.
Miguel was holding a newborn baby in a hospital room.
His face glowed with a joy Emily had never seen during their own years of trying to build a family.
She pressed a trembling hand against her mouth.
Every anniversary.
Every business trip.
Every late-night phone call.
Every unexplained weekend.
Pieces of her marriage began fitting together in ways she had never imagined.
Then she noticed something written on the back of one photograph.
If Emily ever finds this, tell her I'm sorry.
Her heartbeat quickened.
Who had written it?
The handwriting wasn't Miguel's.
She carefully opened one of the envelopes.
Inside was a letter dated four years earlier.
Miguel,
You promised you would leave her.
You promised Daniel would grow up with both of his parents.
I can't keep living like this.
Every time you fly back to Phoenix, you tell me it's the last time.
But it never is.
How many more lies are you going to tell before someone gets hurt?
—Claire
Emily lowered the letter.
Her vision blurred.
Claire.
Whoever she was...
She had believed Miguel's promises just as Emily had.
The room suddenly felt much smaller.
Much colder.
For years she had blamed herself for the growing distance between them.
She had wondered whether grief over infertility had quietly destroyed their marriage.
Now she understood.
The marriage had been breaking because Miguel had been living another life.
She wasn't losing her husband.
She had never truly had him.
A sharp vibration startled her.
Miguel's iPad, sitting on the bedside table, lit up.
A message appeared across the screen.
Boarding complete. Flight 482 to Dallas.
Emily let out a slow breath.
He was still on the plane.
She had a little time.
She returned to the bag.
Beneath the letters lay the old prepaid phone.
The battery was almost dead, but when she pressed the power button, the screen flickered to life.
It didn't ask for a password.
There were only three saved contacts.
Miguel.
Claire.
If Something Happens.
Emily frowned.
She tapped the third contact.
Instead of a phone number...
A note opened.
Only one sentence appeared.
The truth is on the USB. Don't trust Miguel.
Emily slowly looked toward the small black flash drive resting inside the bag.
Her pulse hammered in her ears.
The USB wasn't hidden inside the mattress by accident.
Someone had wanted it hidden.
Someone had expected that one day...
She would find it.
Across the country...
Thirty thousand feet above Arizona...
Miguel sat in first class staring out the airplane window.
The businessman beside him chatted casually about the Dallas conference.
Miguel barely listened.
Something felt wrong.
He reached for his phone even though airplane mode was on.
No messages.
No missed calls.
Yet he couldn't shake the feeling that something had changed.
He remembered Emily standing beside the bed that morning.
The way she had looked at him.
The hesitation in her smile.
His stomach tightened.
Without realizing it, he whispered,
"Please don't touch the mattress."
Back in Phoenix...
Emily plugged the USB into her laptop.
A single folder appeared.
READ ME FIRST
Her hand hesitated over the mouse.
Once she opened it...
There would be no going back.
She clicked.
A video file filled the screen.
The recording began with static.
Then a woman's face slowly came into focus.
It was the same woman from the photographs.
Claire.
She looked exhausted.
Terrified.
She glanced over her shoulder before speaking.
"If you're watching this..."
"...it means Miguel didn't destroy the evidence."
Emily froze.
Claire looked directly into the camera.
"My name is Claire Dawson."
"And if anything has happened to me..."
"...Miguel is lying about far more than an affair."
Before Claire could continue, the front door alarm chimed downstairs.
Emily's heart stopped.
She looked at the clock.
Miguel's flight shouldn't land for another two hours.
May you like
Someone had just entered the house.
And she was no longer certain she was alone.
