Chapter 3 – Someone Came Home Too Soon

Chapter 3 – Someone Came Home Too Soon
The front door alarm chimed again.
Emily's entire body went rigid.
She glanced at the bedroom clock.
11:17 a.m.
Miguel's flight to Dallas had departed less than an hour earlier.
He couldn't possibly be home.
Could he?
The security system announced in its calm electronic voice:
"Front door opened."
Emily quickly pulled the USB from her laptop and slipped it into her pocket.
The old prepaid phone disappeared beneath a pile of folded blankets.
The letters and photographs were pushed back into the plastic bag.
Her hands shook so violently she nearly dropped the birth certificate.
Footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Not the hurried steps of a delivery driver.
Someone who knew the house.
Someone who wasn't in a hurry.
Emily's heartbeat pounded so loudly she was certain whoever had entered could hear it.
The bedroom door moved.
Just an inch.
Then slowly swung open.
It wasn't Miguel.
A woman stood in the doorway.
She looked to be in her late sixties, wearing a floral blouse and carrying a casserole dish wrapped in aluminum foil.
Emily blinked.
"Lydia?"
Miguel's mother smiled warmly.
"I thought I'd surprise you."
Emily almost collapsed with relief.
"Oh my goodness..."
"You scared me."
Lydia frowned.
"Honey..."
"Are you alright?"
Emily forced a smile.
"I... I thought someone else came in."
Lydia noticed the mattress lying in the middle of the room.
The long cut running across one side.
Foam spilling onto the carpet.
"What happened here?"
Emily hesitated.
"I finally cut it open."
Lydia's smile disappeared.
"You..."
"...what?"
Emily looked directly at her.
"There was something hidden inside."
For the first time since arriving...
Fear crossed Lydia's face.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
Emily noticed it immediately.
"You knew."
Lydia remained silent.
"You knew there was something in this mattress."
The older woman slowly placed the casserole dish on the dresser.
"I told him this was a terrible idea."
Emily felt as though the floor had vanished beneath her.
"Him?"
Lydia closed her eyes.
"Miguel."
"I begged him not to hide things in the house."
Emily stared.
"So you knew."
Lydia nodded once.
"But I didn't know exactly what."
Emily reached into the torn mattress and pulled out the plastic bag.
She held up the birth certificate.
"Did you know about Daniel?"
Lydia's face drained of color.
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
"Oh, Miguel..."
Emily whispered,
"So it's true."
The older woman slowly sat on the edge of a chair.
"Yes."
Emily's voice cracked.
"My husband has another child."
Lydia lowered her head.
"Yes."
Silence swallowed the room.
Eight years of marriage.
Five years of infertility.
Hundreds of promises.
Every single memory suddenly felt contaminated.
Emily struggled to breathe.
"How long?"
Lydia answered quietly.
"Almost seven years."
Emily laughed bitterly.
"So almost our entire marriage."
The older woman couldn't deny it.
Emily placed the photographs on the bed.
"I want everything."
"No more lies."
Lydia looked exhausted.
"I only know pieces."
"Then tell me the pieces."
Lydia took a long breath.
"Miguel met Claire during a conference in Denver."
"He told us it was a mistake."
"He said it ended."
Emily looked down at the hospital photograph.
"It clearly didn't."
"No."
"When Claire became pregnant..."
"He promised he would divorce you."
Emily closed her eyes.
"But he never did."
Lydia shook her head.
"He kept saying he was waiting for the right time."
Emily laughed again.
"There never is a right time to destroy someone."
"No."
"There isn't."
Emily reached for the laptop.
"What about this?"
She held up the USB drive.
Lydia looked confused.
"I've never seen that."
Emily reopened Claire's video.
The recording resumed exactly where it had stopped.
Claire looked even more frightened now.
"If you're watching this..."
"...please don't turn this off."
She swallowed hard.
"This isn't only about Miguel cheating."
Emily and Lydia exchanged uneasy glances.
Claire continued.
"Three years ago..."
"I discovered why Miguel traveled so much."
The video briefly shook as if someone had bumped the camera.
Claire looked toward the door before continuing in a whisper.
"He launders money through fake real estate contracts."
Emily stared at the screen.
"No..."
"He said it was only paperwork."
"But I saw everything."
Claire reached toward the camera.
"I copied the financial records."
"They're hidden with this video."
Emily immediately searched the USB.
There were dozens of encrypted files.
Bank statements.
Contracts.
Wire transfers.
Millions of dollars.
Lydia covered her mouth.
"My God."
Emily scrolled through the folders.
One file was labeled:
PHOENIX STORAGE UNIT 114
Another:
PAYMENTS
Then one caught her attention.
SURVEILLANCE
She clicked.
Security footage appeared.
The timestamp read...
Two months earlier.
Emily recognized the location instantly.
Her own bedroom.
She froze.
Someone had secretly installed a hidden camera.
The footage showed Miguel kneeling beside the mattress while Emily slept.
He carefully unzipped the fabric beneath the bed.
Then hid the plastic bag inside before sewing the opening shut.
Emily felt sick.
"He hid it while I was sleeping beside him."
Lydia whispered,
"He was protecting something."
"No."
Emily corrected.
"He was protecting himself."
At that exact moment...
Emily's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She almost ignored it.
Then answered.
"Hello?"
A woman's voice spoke quickly.
"Is this Emily Alvarez?"
"Yes."
"You don't know me."
"My name is Agent Rebecca Collins."
"I'm with the FBI."
Emily looked at the financial documents on the laptop.
Her stomach tightened.
"What is this about?"
There was a brief silence.
Then the agent asked one question.
"Mrs. Alvarez..."
"...has your husband contacted you in the last thirty minutes?"
Emily frowned.
"No."
"He should be on a flight."
Another silence.
Longer this time.
Finally, Agent Collins spoke.
"He never boarded the plane."
Emily's blood ran cold.
"What?"
"We believe your husband deliberately used the business trip as a cover."
"He is still in Phoenix."
Emily slowly looked toward the bedroom window.
Outside...
Across the street...
A black SUV sat parked beneath a tree.
Inside, a man wearing sunglasses lowered a pair of binoculars.
He was watching the house.
Watching the bedroom.
Watching Emily.
Agent Collins's voice became urgent.
"Mrs. Alvarez..."
"If you've found anything belonging to Miguel..."
"You need to leave your house immediately."
Before Emily could answer...
The black SUV's driver's door opened.
A familiar figure stepped out.
Miguel.
He looked directly toward the bedroom window.
Then smiled.
He wasn't supposed to be there.
And somehow...
May you like
He already knew she had found the truth.
