Chapter 7 - The Depravity of Evelyn WhitakerDesperation makes monsters even more reckless. With her children out on bail but facing imminent federal indictment, and her husband refusing to leave his bedroom out of pure shame, Evelyn Whitaker decided to take matters into her own hands. She believed that if she could force Maya into a private meeting without Diana Vance present, she could intimidate the young woman into signing a non-disclosure agreement and dropping the corporate fraud charges.

Using a burner phone, Evelyn managed to track down the location of the safe house Leila had secured for Maya—a private, gated cottage owned by a retired police captain on the outskirts of the city.

On a rainy Tuesday evening, while Leila was away on a mandatory late-shift briefing, a heavy knock sounded on Maya’s front door.

Maya frowned, setting down the baby bottle she was cleaning. She checked the security monitor by the door. Her blood went cold. Standing on the porch, wrapped in a wet fur coat, her face twisted into a mask of bitter desperation, was Evelyn Whitaker.

Maya stepped back, her hand instantly flying to her phone to call Leila. But then she stopped. She looked toward the nursery where her three children were sleeping peacefully. For three years, she had shivered in this woman’s presence. She had allowed Evelyn to criticize her clothes, her background, and her worth.

No more, Maya thought.

She unlocked the door and opened it, keeping the security chain securely engaged. "You have no right to be here, Evelyn. The restraining order is active."

"Open this door, you ungrateful little parasite!" Evelyn hissed, her voice cracking with a manic energy. "Look at what you’ve done to my family! My son is facing prison! Our company is bankrupt! All because you couldn't keep your mouth shut about a minor domestic disagreement!"

"A minor disagreement?" Maya let out a cold, sharp laugh. "You threw us into the freezing cold, Evelyn. You called my babies a shame to your bloodline."

"They are a mistake!" Evelyn screamed, her aristocratic facade fully dropping to reveal the ugly, raw prejudice beneath. "They don't belong in our world! You tricked Daniel! You brought that common, dirty blood into our heritage! If you don't sign the recantation papers my lawyers prepared, I will spend every dollar I have left making sure the state takes those children away from you. I’ll brand you an unfit, unstable mother!"

Maya didn't flinch. She slowly pulled her phone out from behind the doorframe, showing the screen to Evelyn. The red recording dot was blinking. The entire interaction was being streamed live to a secure server managed by Diana Vance’s law firm.

"Thank you, Evelyn," Maya said softly, her voice entirely devoid of fear. "Diana was worried we wouldn't have enough direct evidence of racial animus and premeditated witness intimidation for the federal hate crimes enhancement. You just handed it to us on a silver platter."

Evelyn’s face drained of color. She stepped back off the porch, stumbling against the wet stone steps as the realization of her catastrophic mistake hit her.

"See you in court, mother-in-law," Maya said, and slammed the door in her face.
