Chapter 6 - The Media WarThe Whitakers had always lived and died by their public reputation. For decades, they had carefully curated an image of philanthropic excellence, old-money class, and civic leadership. Diana Vance knew that to ensure a total victory, that image had to be completely incinerated in the public square.

On Friday afternoon, Diana organized a press conference on the steps of the federal courthouse. Maya stood beside her, wearing a simple but elegant cream-colored dress, her dark hair flowing softly past her shoulders. She looked tired, but her posture was no longer bowed. She held one of her triplets, while Leila and a nurse stood closely behind her holding the other two.

The sea of reporters flashed their cameras continuously, the clicking sound filling the crisp afternoon air.

"Good afternoon," Diana Vance spoke into the bank of microphones, her voice echoing with absolute authority. "Today, we have filed a formal criminal and civil complaint against the Whitaker family. For three years, my client, Maya Whitaker, was subjected to covert financial abuse. But the true depravity of the Whitaker family was exposed six days ago."

Diana signaled to her associate, who displayed large, high-resolution photographs on an easel behind her. The images were shocking: Maya’s bruised upper arms where Renata had grabbed her; her raw, red feet from standing barefoot on the frozen pavement; and the police dashcam footage showing the massive Whitaker mansion doors locked tight while a postpartum mother huddled in the cold with her newborn triplets.

A collective gasp went through the crowd of journalists.

"The Whitaker family threw this woman and her three-blessedly healthy children onto the street," Diana continued, her voice dropping to a fierce, condemning whisper. "Not because of a marital dispute, but because these children inherited the beautiful, deep skin tone of Maya's proud ancestors. The Whitakers deemed them 'too dark' to carry their family name. They attempted to erase these children after stealing millions of dollars in land patents from Maya’s late father."

Maya stepped forward to the microphone, looking directly into the primary camera lens. She knew Daniel and Evelyn would be watching from their lawyers' offices.

"My children are not a shame," Maya said, her voice steady, clear, and ringing with a mother’s absolute devotion. "They are a blessing. Their skin is beautiful, their hearts are strong, and I will spend every breath I have remaining ensuring they never have to apologize for existing. The Whitaker name does not define them. They are my father's legacy, and we will take back what belongs to us."

By that evening, the story was trending globally. The hashtag #JusticeForMaya swept across social media platforms. The Whitaker Group's corporate partners began pulling out of contracts by the dozen. The family name had become toxic overnight.
