Chapter 4 - Enter Diana VanceAt 9:00 AM, the door to Maya’s hospital room opened to reveal a woman who radiated absolute power. Diana Vance was in her late 40s, wearing a flawless, sharp charcoal pantsuit, her silver-streaked dark hair pulled into a precise bun. She carried a sleek leather briefcase, and behind her walked a junior associate pushing a cart loaded with legal boxes.

Diana didn't offer a traditional, empty greeting. She walked directly to the bed, looked at Maya, then spent a long, silent moment observing the sleeping triplets.

"They are beautiful, Maya," Diana said, her voice rich, calm, and commanding. "And they are going to be the most expensive mistake the Whitaker family has ever made."

She took a seat in the armchair beside the bed, opening her briefcase with a crisp, metallic snap. "Leila has briefed me on the events of last night. We have the hospital’s medical report detailing your postpartum vulnerability, the physical bruising on your upper arms from Renata, and Leila’s eyewitness testimony. But to truly destroy them, we need to look beyond the assault. We need to look at their money."

Maya looked at her, confused. "Their money? Daniel handles everything. I signed a prenuptial agreement before we married, Diana. His mother forced me to. It says if we divorce, I leave with nothing but my personal belongings."

Diana let out a sharp, dismissive laugh. "A prenuptial agreement is a contract, Maya. And a contract is completely void if it was executed under fraudulent circumstances or if one party engages in egregious criminal conduct during the marriage. Throwing a bleeding mother and newborn infants into the freezing cold constitutes a fundamental breach of public policy. No judge in this country will honor that document."

Diana leaned forward, her eyes narrowing with predatory focus. "But more importantly, my team did a preliminary search on the Whitaker Group’s corporate structure this morning. Three years ago, when you married Daniel, his family’s construction firm was on the verge of bankruptcy. They used your late father’s remaining land patents—which Daniel quietly transferred into his own name using a power of attorney you signed during your pregnancy—to secure a twelve-million-dollar federal infrastructure contract. They didn't just throw you out because of prejudice, Maya. They threw you out because they had already stolen your inheritance and needed you gone before the annual corporate audit next month."

The revelation hit Maya like a physical blow. The trust she had placed in Daniel during her difficult, bedridden pregnancy had been weaponized against her.

"They took my father’s patents?" Maya asked, a sudden, hot wave of anger replacing her fear.

"They did," Diana smiled, and it was a terrifyingly beautiful sight. "And that means we aren't just filing for divorce, Maya. We are filing a multi-million-dollar federal corporate fraud and racketeering lawsuit. By the end of this week, we are going to freeze every single asset the Whitakers own."
