Chapter 5 - The Freezing of the KingdomBy Thursday morning, the corporate headquarters of The Whitaker Group was in a state of absolute panic. Daniel Whitaker stood in his glass-walled office on the top floor, screaming into his desk phone so loudly that his secretary could hear him through the reinforced doors.

"What do you mean our corporate operational accounts are locked?!" Daniel roared. "We have a payroll run tomorrow! We have three concrete pours scheduled for the highway project! Unlock them immediately!"
"Sir, we can't," the frantic voice of his chief financial officer replied. "A federal marshal just served our bank with an emergency ex-parte asset freezing order signed by a district judge. The plaintiff is listed as Maya Whitaker, represented by Vance & Associates. They are alleging systematic corporate theft, fraudulent transfer of intellectual property, and marital asset dissipation."
Daniel slammed the phone down, his hands shaking violently. He looked up to see his mother, Evelyn, and his sister, Renata, walking into his office. Both women looked pale, their usual arrogance replaced by a visible, creeping dread.
"Daniel," Evelyn said, her voice tight. "The country club just informed me that our family membership has been suspended pending an investigation. And there are reporters from the local news station standing outside the main gates of the house."
"She’s fighting back," Renata hissed, crossing her arms defensively. "That little charity-case orphan is trying to ruin us. Daniel, you need to call her. Threaten her with the prenuptial agreement! Tell her we’ll take the babies away permanently through child protective services if she doesn't drop the lawsuit!"
"It’s too late for that," Daniel whispered, staring out the window at the city skyline. "I tried to call her. Her phone is disconnected. Every avenue goes through Diana Vance. Do you know who that is, Renata? She’s the woman who dismantled the Vance logistics empire last year. She doesn't settle. She destroys."
Suddenly, the office door was pushed open. Two uniform police officers, accompanied by Detective Miller, stepped into the room.
"Daniel Whitaker? Renata Whitaker?" Miller asked, pulling a set of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Evelyn shrieked, stepping in front of her children. "Get out of this private office!"

"We have warrants for the arrest of Daniel Whitaker for felony grand larceny and corporate fraud, and Renata Whitaker for domestic battery and reckless endangerment," Miller announced calmly. "Step away from the desk, sir. Put your hands behind your back."
As the handcuffs clicked into place around Daniel’s wrists, the reality of his actions finally began to settle into his chest. He looked back at his mother, but Evelyn could only cover her mouth in horror as her son and daughter were led through the glass lobby in front of their entire corporate staff.
