Chapter 5: The Courtroom Pressure

The federal courtroom was colder than Alejandro expected.

Ricardo avoided eye contact as evidence was laid out piece by piece—fraud, coercion, abuse footage, financial manipulation. Doña Victoria sat rigid beside him, her composure finally cracked beyond repair.

But when Elena was called to testify, the room shifted.

She walked slowly, carefully, as if afraid the floor might disappear beneath her.

Alejandro watched from behind the prosecution table, fists clenched.

When asked to describe what happened in the house, Elena hesitated for a long time.

Then she spoke.

“They told me I was a problem that needed fixing,” she said softly. “And that my husband… had stopped caring whether I disappeared.”

A silence fell over the courtroom.

Even Ricardo looked up then—confused, shaken.
