The estate no longer felt like a fortress of tension. It felt empty in a way that was almost unfamiliar—like a house exhaling after holding its breath for years.
Elena stayed close to Alejandro as they moved through the upper floor. Every sound—the distant closing of a door, the faint hum of the air conditioner—made her instinctively pause. Six months of confinement had trained her body to expect punishment in silence.
Alejandro noticed everything. The way she hesitated before stepping into open spaces. The way her eyes checked corners before settling on him.
He stopped walking and gently cupped her face. “You’re not there anymore,” he said. “No one can touch you again.”
Elena’s lips trembled. “They said you wouldn’t come back for me.”
His jaw tightened, but his voice stayed steady. “They were wrong.”
