Chapter 6 - The Long ShadowDespite the triumph, the remnants of the past occasionally surfaced. One afternoon, while visiting a construction site in downtown Manhattan, Oliver ran into Isabella Thorne. Isabella was working as a high-end real estate broker, wearing a sharp suit and looking every bit as polished as she had in the gala ballroom.

Isabella stopped, her eyes widening as she recognized Oliver. "Vance? I heard you took everything. I guess you’re not the 'nobody' I thought you were."

Oliver leaned against a support beam, her expression unbothered. "I’m the same person I was the night you poured that wine on me, Isabella. The only thing that changed was your perception of value. You always judged things by the price tag. That was your biggest mistake."

Isabella laughed, a thin, brittle sound. "You think you’ve won, don't you? You’re alone, Oliver. You’re raising a child without a father. That’s not a victory; that’s a tragedy."

"A father like Liam would be a disaster," Oliver corrected calmly. "I’m not alone. I have my son, my company, and the satisfaction of knowing I never had to compromise my integrity to succeed. You? You’re still hunting for the next big contract, still desperate for the approval of people who would replace you in a second if your commission rate dropped."

Isabella turned to walk away, her poise momentarily shattered by the biting truth of the observation. Oliver watched her go, a quiet sense of detachment washing over her. She didn't need Isabella’s respect, nor did she need Liam’s love. She had found a kind of power that was untouchable—the power of knowing exactly who she was and what she was capable of achieving.
