Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the LedgerThe next morning, the Sterling Architecture headquarters was buzzing with a nervous, frantic energy. A sudden, massive freeze had been placed on their corporate banking accounts, and three of their largest development contracts had been abruptly terminated by a shell company nobody had ever heard of: Vance Holdings.

Liam stood in his office, his face pale as he stared at the red "Access Denied" screens on his terminal. "How is this possible? Those contracts are air-tight! Who is Vance Holdings?"

Constance stormed into the room, her eyes wild with panic. "It’s a disaster, Liam! The bank says the liquidation orders were signed by the primary stakeholder. Apparently, they’ve owned the majority share of our firm for the last six months and have decided to call in the debt. We’re being dissolved! Everything—the firm, the estate, the pending projects—everything is being repossessed."

"Who is the stakeholder?" Liam roared, slamming his fist onto his mahogany desk.

"That’s the thing," Constance whispered, her voice trembling. "They haven't identified the director. But they sent a lawyer. He’s in the lobby right now, and he insists on speaking to you—and your wife."

"My wife?" Liam spat. "Where is that useless girl? She left the gala and hasn't been back to the house since. She’s probably cowering somewhere, terrified of what I’ll do when I find her."

They marched into the lobby, expecting to find a team of debt collectors. Instead, they found a singular, impeccably dressed man—Arthur Pendergast, the most feared corporate attorney in the country. Standing beside him was Oliver.

But it wasn't the Oliver they knew.

She wore a tailored white wool coat, her blonde hair swept back into a sharp, commanding style, her face devoid of the timid, apologetic expression she had worn for two years. She stood with a poise that made the air in the room shift.

Liam stopped dead in his tracks. "Oliver? What are you doing here? You’re supposed to be—"

"I’m supposed to be at home, being a 'nobody'?" Oliver interrupted, her voice cool, sharp, and entirely devoid of the softness he had once exploited. She turned to Arthur. "Mr. Pendergast, please inform them."

Arthur stepped forward, handing Liam a folder with a thin, menacing smile. "Mr. Sterling, you are currently standing on property owned by the Vance Legacy Trust. Your wife, Ms. Oliver Vance, is the sole heir to the Vance fortune. She has been managing your family's financial 'success' for the last six months, funding your firm with her father’s capital while you and your mother systematically attempted to drain her personal accounts to cover Isabella Thorne’s gambling debts."

Liam turned to his wife, his face purple. "You’re a Vance? You’re... you’re Kane Vance’s daughter? You let me believe you were a library assistant? You let me humiliate you?"

"I let you show me exactly who you were," Oliver said, her eyes tracking the movement of his throat as he struggled for air. "You didn't marry a person, Liam. You married a paycheck. And now, the money is gone. Along with the house, the firm, and your future. Everything you own belongs to me."
