Chapter 9 - The Sovereign HealingAs the winter of 2026 approached, the townhome in Newport became a sanctuary of warmth and laughter.

Adriano had become a constant presence in their lives. He would drive down from Providence on weekends, helping Rebecca plant winter vegetables in the garden, teaching Clementine how to ride a small bicycle with training wheels, and sitting on the porch to watch the sunset over the water.
The man who had once been the most feared boss in New England had found his true calling in the quiet, ordinary moments of family. He had learned to laugh again—not the polite, cold laughs of the high-society guests in the garden, but a deep, booming laugh that made Clementine giggle and Rusty bark with joy.
One evening, after Clementine had been tucked into bed, Rebecca and Adriano sat by the stone fireplace in the living room, a bottle of red wine open between them.
“I had a dream about Thomas last night,” Rebecca said softly, her eyes reflecting the dancing flames. “He was standing by his old truck, smiling. He looked happy. He told me I didn't need to worry about him anymore.”
Adriano looked at her, his dark eyes filled with a deep, quiet emotion. “He is at peace, Rebecca. Because he knows the woman he loved is finally safe. And his daughter is going to grow up knowing she is a treasure, not a secret.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, delicate gold necklace, holding it out to her. Suspended from the thin chain was a small, beautifully carved gold rose.
“This belonged to our mother,” Adriano said. “Thomas always wanted to give it to the woman he married, but he left before he could take it from the family safe. I want you to have it, Rebecca.”

Rebecca took the necklace, her fingers brushing against his. She looked at the gold rose, then up at his face, realizing that the journey which had started with a cruel push into a pool had led them to a place of true, sovereign grace.
“Thank you, Adriano,” she whispered, leaning forward to press a soft, gentle kiss against his scarred cheek. “For everything.”
