Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Silver EmpressThe rain began to fall again at midnight, a steady, depressing drizzle that washed the summer heat from the air.

On the grand gravel driveway of the Falcone estate, Genevieve stood next to her designer suitcases, her silver dress wet and ruined, her hair plastered to her face. Two of Adriano’s security guards stood near the heavy iron gates, their arms crossed, their faces completely indifferent to her frantic pleading.

“You can't do this to me!” Genevieve screamed, her voice cracking with a mixture of terror and aristocratic rage. “I am a Ross! My father built this city! Adriano is nothing without our connections! Let me in! I need to speak to him!”

The front doors of the mansion remained closed, their dark oak surfaces reflecting the flashing blue lights of the police cars that had just pulled onto the property.

Within minutes, four federal agents stepped out of the vehicles, their badges gleaming in the rain. They walked past Genevieve without a word, their focus entirely on the warrant they held in their hands. Behind them, two more agents approached Genevieve, producing a pair of steel handcuffs.

“Genevieve Falcone,” the lead agent said. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, financial fraud, and obstruction of justice.”

As the metal clicked around her wrists, Genevieve let out a sharp, pathetic sob, her silver high heels slipping on the wet gravel as she was led toward the back of the police car. She looked up at the high windows of the mansion, hoping to see Adriano, hoping to see some sign of the protection she had taken for granted for ten years.

But the windows were dark.

The only person watching her from the terrace was Rebecca Hail, standing wrapped in her warm wool blanket, holding her sleeping daughter close to her chest.

Rebecca didn't smile. She didn't laugh. She didn't feel the cheap satisfaction of revenge. She only felt a deep, quiet relief that the shadow which had haunted her life for three years had finally been lifted, dragged away into the dark night by the very hands that had created it.
