Chapter 7 - The Legal BattlegroundThe elevator doors opened once more, revealing a cadre of police officers, a social worker from Child Protective Services, and Gerald Whitmore’s personal attorney, Arthur Vance (Marcus Vance's estranged brother).

"Mr. Cole," the lead officer said, looking incredibly uncomfortable. He clearly didn't want to be there, especially after seeing the news, but he had a signed court order in his hand. "We have a warrant to remove the minor, Lily Whitmore, from your custody and place her in state-managed emergency care pending a guardianship hearing."

Arthur Vance stepped forward, a smug smile on his face. "Mr. Cole, your media stunt was very impressive. But the law is the law. Until a court proves otherwise, Gerald Whitmore is the legal patriarch, and Victoria Whitmore is legally designated as unfit due to recent psychiatric medical records we have filed."

"Psychiatric records?" Victoria screamed, stepping back from Lin, her face pale. "Those are fake! My father forced a doctor to medicate me after I found out about the ledger!"

"Can you prove that in a court of law right now, Ms. Whitmore?" Arthur asked smoothly. "No. Officers, take the child."

The social worker stepped toward the sofa where Lily sat. The little girl shrank back, her eyes wide with terror, her tiny body shaking as she clutched her plastic cup like a weapon. She looked at Ethan, her silent gaze begging for him to save her again.

Ethan stepped directly into the social worker's path. His presence was massive, immovable.

"If you touch that child," Ethan said, his voice vibrating with a quiet fury that made the officers draw back their hands, "you will be violating federal diplomatic immunity."

Arthur laughed. "Diplomatic immunity? Don't be ridiculous, Ethan. This is a domestic custody dispute."

"Is it?" Ethan pulled a sleek, embossed leather folder from his desk and tossed it onto the coffee table. "Open it."

Arthur’s smile faltered. He picked up the folder and opened it. His eyes quickly scanned the documents, and the color drained from his face until he looked as white as the marble floors.

"What is this?" Arthur whispered.

"That," Ethan said, "is an official adoption certificate and a dual-citizenship declaration issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore, finalized exactly twelve hours ago. Lily’s father, Lin Chen, is a legal resident of Singapore through his architectural firm's global expansion. I am the co-signer and legal international guardian of Lin's estate in the United States."

Ethan leaned in close to Arthur, his voice a lethal whisper. "The child is no longer legally a 'Whitmore'. She is Lily Chen, a foreign national under the protective guardianship of Cole Industries. Your domestic warrant is worth less than toilet paper in this room. If your officers touch her, it becomes an international incident. Now, get out of my building before I have my security team throw you out for violating diplomatic airspace."

The lead police officer looked at the documents, then at Arthur’s terrified face. He folded his warrant. "We're leaving. This is out of our jurisdiction."

As the legal team and police retreated in disgrace, Lily let out a small breath, her tiny body relaxing. For the first time, she looked at Ethan not just as a protector, but as a hero.
