Chapter 6 - The Counter-StrikeEthan’s eyes turned to steel as he stared out over the city. "Let them try. Marcus, activate the secondary protocol. Bring down the hammer."

"Are you sure?" Marcus hesitated. "If we release the full dossier now, it will trigger a financial nuclear winter for the Whitmore Group. The fallout will hit Victoria’s trust fund too."
"Victoria doesn't care about the money, and neither do I," Ethan said coldly. "Do it."
Within two hours, the media landscape of the United States experienced an unprecedented earthquake. Ethan didn't just send the files to the press; he bought airtime. Every television network owned by Cole Industries preempted regular programming to broadcast a special investigative report.
The headline stripped across the nation: "THE HOLLOW EMPIRE: HOW CHICAGO’S RICHEST FAMILY IMPRISONED THEIR OWN HEIRESS."
The leaked audio files of Gerald Whitmore admitting to locking a three-year-old child in a basement to protect a corporate merger played on a loop. Documents showing forged stillbirth certificates signed by a corrupt doctor at a Whitmore-funded hospital were displayed in high resolution.
The public reaction was immediate and ferocious. By evening, a massive crowd of protesters had gathered outside the Whitmore corporate headquarters and the suburban mansion, demanding Gerald’s arrest. The Whitmore Group’s stock took a historic plunge, losing 40% of its value in a matter of hours. The European conglomerate instantly pulled out of the multi-billion-dollar merger, releasing a statement expressing their absolute horror at the allegations.
Inside the penthouse, Ethan watched the news tickers roll. But his focus was interrupted by a commotion at the secure elevator.
The doors slid open, and a man rushed out, breathless, his clothes wrinkled from travel. He was a young Chinese man with sharp, intelligent features, though his eyes were wild with exhaustion and desperation.
"Victoria!" the man cried out.
Victoria whipped around. Her eyes went wide. "Lin?"
It was Lin Chen, the architect. The man Gerald claimed had taken a bribe and abandoned his family.
Before Victoria could speak, Lin fell to his knees, his voice cracking with emotion. "I didn't leave you, Victoria. I swear to God, I didn't leave you. Three years ago, your father’s men intercepted me. They took my passport, beat me, and threw me on a cargo flight back to Shanghai. They threatened to kill my parents if I ever contacted you again. I’ve been trying to get back into the country for three years under a different name. When I saw the news broadcast in London during a layover... I took the first private charter I could find."
Victoria ran to him, throwing her arms around his neck as they both collapsed into tears. The puzzle was finally whole. The love had never died; it had simply been buried alive by the malice of one old man.

Ethan watched the reunion from across the room, feeling a profound sense of justice settling in his chest. But his satisfaction was short-lived. A sudden flash of red and blue lights illuminated the penthouse windows from the street far below.
The police had arrived. And they weren't alone.
