Chapter 4 – The Trap Within the Mansion

Chapter 4 – The Trap Within the Mansion

Daniel barely slept.

Harold's revelation echoed in his mind over and over.

The ghost security credential had been created three weeks before his wedding.

If that was true, someone had been preparing for this long before Celeste officially entered Noah's life.

Either she was part of the conspiracy from the beginning...

Or she had unknowingly become another piece on the board.

Neither possibility made Daniel feel any safer.

The next morning, Daniel changed everything.

He canceled every household employee except the longtime groundskeeper, whose family had worked for the Vales for three decades.

He replaced every exterior lock.

He disconnected the mansion from its smart-home network.

Most importantly, he never allowed Noah out of his sight.

Celeste watched him silently from the breakfast table.

"You've turned this house into a fortress."

"I'm protecting my family."

She stirred her coffee.

"From whom?"

"I intend to find out."

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Finally, Celeste sighed.

"If this is about Noah's nightmares again, I already told you—"

Daniel interrupted her.

"Noah hasn't had a single attack since I started preparing every meal myself."

The spoon froze halfway to her cup.

"You've been keeping track?"

"I keep track of everything."

A flicker of uncertainty crossed her face before she forced a smile.

"I'm glad he's feeling better."

"So am I."

At noon, Professor Whitaker arrived carrying a locked aluminum case.

"I finished the analysis."

Daniel led him into the study and locked the door.

Whitaker placed several microscope photographs on the desk.

"The synthetic capsules were carrying dormant microorganisms."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Engineered?"

"Yes."

"Dangerous?"

"They're designed to survive the stomach's acidic environment."

Daniel looked at the images carefully.

"What happens after that?"

"I don't know."

Whitaker removed another report.

"But I do know this."

He pointed to the chemical composition.

"They cannot reproduce."

Daniel frowned.

"So they aren't an infection."

"No."

"They're delivery vehicles."

"For what?"

Whitaker looked directly into Daniel's eyes.

"I believe they're experimental biological sensors."

Daniel blinked.

"Sensors?"

"They attach themselves temporarily to intestinal tissue."

"For what purpose?"

"I can't prove it."

Whitaker hesitated.

"But they appear to collect biological data before breaking down naturally."

Daniel stood slowly.

"Someone used my son as a test subject."

Whitaker didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Before they could continue, the security alarm chimed.

Someone had entered through the front gate.

Daniel checked the monitor.

Detective Laura Bennett.

The lead investigator assigned after the hospital filed a mandatory child welfare report.

Daniel opened the door.

"Detective."

"I'd like to ask a few more questions."

"Come in."

Celeste descended the staircase moments later.

She smiled warmly.

"Officer, thank you for coming."

"It's Detective."

"My mistake."

Laura observed both of them carefully.

"I've reviewed the hospital records."

Daniel folded his arms.

"And?"

"The doctors couldn't explain Noah's symptoms."

"No."

"But they also found no evidence of abuse."

Daniel remained silent.

Laura continued.

"I'd like to speak with Noah alone."

"No."

Both Daniel and Celeste answered simultaneously.

The detective noticed.

"So you agree on something."

Daniel looked toward Noah, who was quietly coloring at the dining table.

"He's frightened enough already."

Laura nodded.

"Then I'll simply observe."

For the next hour, the detective watched the household.

She noticed Noah smiled only when Daniel was nearby.

She noticed he politely answered Celeste but never willingly approached her.

She noticed Daniel personally opened every package delivered to the house.

When lunch arrived, another detail caught her attention.

Daniel served Noah from a separate pot.

He never touched the food Celeste had prepared.

Laura said nothing.

But she noticed.

That afternoon, Mara called again.

"I remembered something."

Daniel stepped outside to take the call.

"What is it?"

"The night before Noah got sick..."

"Go on."

"I saw Mrs. Vale arguing with someone."

"Who?"

"I couldn't see him."

"What did you hear?"

"Only one sentence."

"What was it?"

Mara swallowed.

"He told her..."

She lowered her voice.

"'The boy is becoming valuable.'"

Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.

Not dangerous.

Valuable.

That wasn't the language of revenge.

It was the language of an experiment.

That evening, Daniel quietly searched Celeste's office while she attended an online charity meeting.

Most drawers contained perfectly ordinary paperwork.

Receipts.

Event schedules.

Donation records.

Then he discovered a hidden compartment inside her desk.

His heartbeat quickened.

Inside was a passport.

Not unusual.

Except it wasn't hers.

The photograph showed a woman who looked exactly like Celeste.

But the name read:

Clara Morrison.

Issued nine years earlier.

Different birthday.

Different signature.

Different nationality.

Daniel stared at it.

His wife had another identity.

Or someone had created one for her.

Before he could investigate further, footsteps approached.

He closed the compartment just as Celeste entered.

She smiled.

"What are you doing in here?"

Daniel remained calm.

"Looking for a pen."

She laughed softly.

"You always lose them."

He smiled back.

"So it seems."

Late that night, after everyone had gone to bed, Daniel returned to the hidden compartment.

The passport was gone.

So was every document inside.

She knew.

Either she had noticed his search...

Or someone had warned her.

As he turned to leave, his phone vibrated.

It was Detective Bennett.

Her voice was unusually tense.

"Mr. Vale, I need you to listen carefully."

"I'm listening."

"I checked the background information your wife provided when you married."

"And?"

"There are inconsistencies."

"What kind?"

"The university she claimed to attend has no graduation record."

Daniel's pulse accelerated.

"The employment history?"

"Also fabricated."

"What about her birth certificate?"

A long silence followed.

Finally, Laura answered.

"It exists."

Daniel exhaled slowly.

"But..."

"It belongs to another woman who died eleven years ago."

The room suddenly felt ice cold.

Daniel looked toward the bedroom where Celeste slept peacefully.

If the detective was right...

Then the woman he had married wasn't really Celeste at all.

She had stolen someone else's identity.

May you like

And whoever she truly was...

She had entered his family's life under a name that had never belonged to her.
