Chapter 2 – Shadows Behind the Smile

Chapter 2 – Shadows Behind the Smile
Daniel didn't hesitate.
He crossed the hallway in three strides and pulled Noah into his arms before looking inside the bedroom.
Moonlight spilled across the neatly arranged furniture. The curtains moved gently in the breeze from the slightly open window. Toys rested exactly where they had been left earlier that evening.
Nothing.
Yet Noah clung to his father with enough force to make Daniel's shoulders ache.
"They're gone now," Noah whispered.
"Who is gone?"
"The little black bugs."
Daniel's heartbeat quickened.
"Where did you see them?"
"They come out after she kisses me goodnight."
Daniel glanced around the room again. Every instinct told him something was wrong, but there was nothing visible. He carried Noah into the guest room instead.
"You'll sleep with me tonight."
Noah nodded without argument.
Within minutes, the exhausted boy drifted asleep, but Daniel remained awake beside him, replaying every conversation from the past month.
The sudden stomach attacks.
The doctors finding nothing.
Celeste insisting Noah needed psychiatric treatment.
The locked pantry.
The strange powder.
The mysterious fragments hidden inside the chocolate.
Individually, each incident could be explained away.
Together, they formed a pattern.
Someone wanted Noah to appear mentally unstable.
And that someone lived under the same roof.
At sunrise, Daniel quietly entered Noah's bedroom wearing gloves.
He searched carefully.
Nothing beneath the bed.
Nothing inside the dresser.
Nothing hidden behind the curtains.
Then he noticed the air vent beside the bookshelf.
One screw looked newer than the others.
He removed the cover.
Inside the duct rested a tiny black device no larger than a coin.
It wasn't a camera.
It was a speaker.
Daniel turned it over.
No serial number.
No manufacturer.
Professional equipment.
Someone had been placing sounds inside Noah's room.
His stomach tightened.
Children could be frightened into believing almost anything if they heard whispers every night while half asleep.
He slipped the device into an evidence bag.
Downstairs, Celeste prepared breakfast with her usual effortless elegance.
"You both disappeared last night," she said pleasantly.
"Noah had a nightmare."
"Oh, poor thing."
She reached toward Noah's hair.
The boy instinctively stepped behind Daniel.
For the first time, genuine annoyance crossed Celeste's face.
It lasted less than a second.
Then the warm smile returned.
"I'm worried he's becoming afraid of everyone."
Daniel poured coffee without answering.
"You should let Dr. Evans evaluate him again."
"I'll decide what's best for my son."
"Our son."
Daniel met her gaze.
"No."
Silence filled the kitchen.
Mara, pretending to wipe the counter, lowered her eyes.
Celeste laughed softly.
"I suppose stress makes people say strange things."
Daniel simply walked Noah to the car.
Instead of taking Noah to school, Daniel drove to his company's private research facility.
Only two people there had his complete trust.
Dr. Elena Brooks, the head of biological analysis, examined the black fragments under advanced imaging equipment.
She frowned almost immediately.
"Where did these come from?"
"I need facts first."
She enlarged the image again.
"They're synthetic capsules."
"I know."
"But look here."
She highlighted microscopic grooves.
"They were manufactured with extreme precision."
"Can they contain living organisms?"
Elena slowly looked at him.
"Who told you that?"
"So they can."
"They can."
Her expression grew serious.
"But this isn't commercially available technology."
Daniel felt the room become colder.
"Who would have access?"
She hesitated.
"Military laboratories."
"Anything else?"
"A handful of private biotech companies."
Daniel thought of his own competitors.
Vale Biotech had spent years developing targeted medical delivery systems.
Several rivals had failed spectacularly trying to copy the research.
Someone with enough money—and enough hatred—could be willing to cross every ethical line.
Meanwhile, Mara called unexpectedly.
"Mr. Vale..."
"What happened?"
"I think Mrs. Vale knows."
"What makes you say that?"
"I found my bedroom searched."
Daniel stopped walking.
"Did she take anything?"
"I don't know."
"My notebook was moved."
"Leave the house."
"What?"
"Right now."
"I don't want Noah alone."
"I'll be there in fifteen minutes."
Daniel reached the mansion just as Mara stepped outside carrying a small backpack.
She looked frightened.
"I didn't imagine it."
"I believe you."
Before another word could be spoken, the front door opened.
Celeste appeared.
"There you are."
Her smile looked flawless.
"Mara, I was looking everywhere for you."
"I... I was just—"
"Leaving?"
Celeste tilted her head.
"What a shame."
She held out an envelope.
"I've decided we no longer need your services."
Mara stared.
"You fired me?"
"You've seemed distracted lately."
Daniel stepped forward.
"I didn't approve this."
Celeste folded her hands.
"You've been busy."
"I'm not now."
The smile disappeared.
For several long seconds neither spoke.
Finally, Celeste placed the envelope into Mara's trembling hands.
"I've already transferred three months' salary."
Mara looked at Daniel.
He gave a barely noticeable nod.
Take it.
Leave safely.
She understood.
Without another word, she walked toward the gate.
Daniel watched until her taxi disappeared.
Only then did he turn back toward his wife.
"You dismissed the only person Noah trusted."
Celeste sighed dramatically.
"She was filling his head with nonsense."
"Was she?"
"I've been trying to protect this family."
Daniel stared at her.
For the first time, he realized something chilling.
Celeste wasn't nervous anymore.
She was confident.
As if she believed she had already won.
That evening, Daniel reviewed the hidden security footage once again.
Everything appeared ordinary until 1:17 a.m.
A figure dressed in black entered through the back service entrance using a keycard.
The person's face remained hidden beneath a hood.
They walked directly toward the locked pantry.
They stayed inside for exactly forty-three seconds.
Then they disappeared into the darkness.
The timestamp revealed one terrifying detail.
Celeste had been asleep upstairs the entire time.
Daniel froze.
If Celeste wasn't the one entering the pantry that night...
May you like
Then someone else had access to his home.
And the conspiracy against Noah was far larger than he had imagined.
