Chapter 3 – The Hidden Partner

Chapter 3 – The Hidden Partner
Daniel replayed the security footage six times.
The hooded figure never once looked toward the cameras.
Whoever it was knew exactly where every blind spot in the mansion should have been. Only someone familiar with the property—or someone who had studied its security system—could move with that level of confidence.
He froze the final frame.
The visitor's left hand briefly emerged from beneath the sleeve while opening the pantry.
A silver ring.
Square-shaped.
Engraved with a black crest.
Daniel had seen it before.
Not recently.
Years ago.
His pulse slowed as memory replaced panic.
The ring belonged to a private investment group that had once tried to acquire Vale Biotech. When Daniel refused to sell, negotiations had ended politely—but several executives had hinted that he would eventually regret turning them down.
He had dismissed it as corporate arrogance.
Now he wasn't so sure.
The next morning, Noah seemed calmer.
Daniel prepared breakfast himself, using ingredients he had purchased on the way home from the office before dawn.
Every package had remained sealed until that morning.
Noah ate without hesitation.
No stomach pain.
No sudden panic.
No cries of invisible creatures biting him from the inside.
Daniel quietly wrote the observation into a notebook.
The attacks weren't random.
They happened only after food prepared inside the mansion.
Celeste entered wearing an elegant cream-colored dress.
"You've become quite protective."
"I'm being careful."
"You don't trust me."
Daniel met her eyes.
"Should I?"
She smiled.
"If you truly believed I wanted to hurt Noah, you would've called the police."
"I call people when I have proof."
For the briefest moment, her expression tightened.
Then she laughed.
"I married a very patient man."
"No."
Daniel calmly poured another cup of coffee.
"You married a very thorough one."
After Celeste left for a charity committee meeting, Daniel contacted the head of security at Vale Biotech.
"I need every electronic lock log from this house."
"The mansion isn't connected to company servers anymore."
"I know."
"So why—"
"Because I never removed the backup recorder."
Silence.
"I'll check."
Within thirty minutes, encrypted records arrived.
Daniel searched every entry from the past month.
Most were ordinary.
Family members.
Cleaning staff.
Maintenance visits.
Then one access card appeared repeatedly.
Visitor 7A.
No registered owner.
No employee assigned.
No authorization history.
Someone had created a ghost credential.
Daniel drove directly to the company archive.
Only one person still maintained old security databases.
Harold Benson.
The sixty-eight-year-old systems engineer frowned as he examined the logs.
"This card shouldn't exist."
"But it does."
Harold enlarged the records.
"Someone copied administrator privileges."
"Can you identify who?"
"It would've required executive authorization."
Daniel's expression darkened.
"There are only three executives with that level of access."
Harold nodded slowly.
"And one of them resigned eight months ago."
Daniel already knew the name before Harold spoke it.
Victor Lang.
Former Director of Strategic Development.
The same executive who had led negotiations during the failed acquisition.
Meanwhile, Mara called from an unfamiliar number.
"I couldn't stay quiet."
"Where are you?"
"A motel outside the city."
"Are you safe?"
"I think so."
"What happened?"
She took a shaky breath.
"The day before I was fired... I saw someone inside Noah's room."
Daniel's grip tightened around the phone.
"Who?"
"I couldn't see the face."
"What time?"
"After midnight."
"What were they doing?"
"They opened the air vent."
Daniel's mind raced.
"The speaker."
"There was another thing."
"What?"
"They placed a tiny package behind the bookshelf."
Within twenty minutes Daniel was back at the mansion.
The package remained exactly where Mara described.
It was no larger than a deck of cards.
Wrapped in black plastic.
He carefully opened it inside his workshop.
Inside rested a miniature audio player.
Still powered on.
He pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a woman's soft voice whispered repeatedly.
They're coming...
Don't trust anyone...
You're sick...
Nobody believes you...
Daniel stopped the recording.
A child hearing those words night after night could easily begin to confuse dreams with reality.
Noah hadn't been imagining everything.
Someone had been deliberately terrifying him.
That evening Daniel invited Celeste to dinner.
She seemed pleasantly surprised.
"I thought we could use a peaceful night," he said.
"I'd like that."
They sat across from one another in the quiet dining room.
Candles flickered between them.
Halfway through the meal, Daniel slid a photograph across the table.
The image showed the hidden speaker from Noah's bedroom.
Celeste stared at it.
"What is this?"
"You tell me."
"I've never seen it."
He watched her carefully.
No hesitation.
No obvious fear.
Only confusion.
Real confusion.
Daniel frowned internally.
Either she was an extraordinary actress...
Or someone else had been manipulating events without her knowledge.
Then she spoke.
"Daniel..."
"What?"
"I've wanted to tell you something."
She lowered her voice.
"I think someone has been following me."
He didn't answer.
She continued.
"At first I thought I was imagining it."
"When?"
"For weeks."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because after everything that's happened... I was afraid you'd think I was making excuses."
Daniel studied her face.
Her breathing was uneven.
Her hands trembled slightly.
If she was acting, it was flawless.
Later that night, Daniel reviewed the exterior surveillance cameras.
At 11:42 p.m., a black sedan stopped briefly across the street.
Its headlights remained off.
Someone inside appeared to be watching the mansion.
The vehicle stayed for nine minutes before driving away.
Daniel enlarged the license plate.
The final two numbers became visible.
...27.
His phone rang.
It was Harold.
"I found something."
"What?"
"The ghost security card."
"Go on."
"It wasn't created recently."
Daniel felt a chill.
"When?"
Harold answered quietly.
"The authorization was issued... three weeks before your wedding."
Daniel looked upstairs toward the bedroom where Celeste slept.
If someone had infiltrated the mansion before she even became his wife...
May you like
Then perhaps the real mastermind had never been Celeste at all.
Perhaps they had both been walking into the same trap.
